Anti-spam Seems To Choke Outlook 2007

Hi Gord,

Try to extend the extend the timed-out for Outlook 2007 as explained below and see if the issue still occurs:

1)Open Outlook 2007

2)Click on the Tools menu

3)In the Tools menu click on the menu that says "Account Settings"

4)Double Click on the e-mail account that you would like to change

5)Click on the button that says "More Settings"

6)Click on the tab that says "Advanced"

7)You will see a section that says "Server Timeouts"in this section move the slider bar all the way to Long

8)Click on OK

9)Click on Next and then click on Finish

10)Restart Outlook

Checked that out already Dan ,, it's set to the longest possible ,, this doesn't happen everytime , but we've let it go sometimes upwards of 20 minutes and it hasn't d/l ,, then we turned off antispam and started the send/receive again and within 15 seconds it starts downloading the mail.

The odd thing about it , is that when it isn't going to d/l we can tell as we don't get the box notifying us that BD is scanning incoming mail ,, but if it is going to d/l okay we get the notification and it d/l's fine.

Don't know if this means anything to you or not , but it just occured to me about the notification box.

I am having the same issues with Outlook 2003 on WinXP Pro SP3 and 4G of RAM.

VSSERV.exe takes off with almost all of the CPU bringing my system to a screeching slowdown. I almost believe there is a memory leak in VSSERV because of the amount of memory it is consuming. I am currently seeing VSSERV with a 621M of RAM commit size after my system has been up for 20+ hours. I will bet by this time tomorrow that size is closer to a Gig.

I am also tired of being told other A/V programs are at fault when, in fact, I have no other A/V software installed. I do have Norton Systemworks installed STRICTLY for WinDoctor (registry fixer) and Speed Disk (disk defrag).

If my PC goes to screensaver, for which I have a password requirement to get back in, god help me sometimes when Outlook and VSSERV are hogging all the resources. It can take up to 20 minutes to finally get a login prompt to get back in. And, sometimes I have to do a reboot which can take up to an hour for everything to end cleanly.

I'm at my wits' end with BD. What was once the most lightweight and fastest solution seems to have been taken over and re-written by Symantec <img class= " />

How many people have to complain about this before it gets fixed properly??

None of the emails have had attachments ,, how often does this occur ,, hmmm i'd say maybe once every five times that Outlook is opened.

Now i must admit that lately it hasn't been as bad as it was just after installing BDTS 11 ,, it seems to have gotten better , don't know if it as a update that has improved things , but it used to be about every other time opening Outlook that it would do this.

Seems things are a bit more stable and Send/Receive hangs a little less often. We'll see. Fingers crossed. <_<

This is just my opinion, but it was issues like you describe that forced me to leave the last a/v - a/s - firewall product I had been using for years. When I decided on BD (after running a trial version for a few weeks on my PCs) I went with what I will call the "lighter" option - AntiVirus Pro 2011. I'm using the Windows firewall, plus I'm behind the hardware firewall in my router. I've found that the "total internet security" products have just too many hooks deep into the OS and can cause problems. Even at that, I've turned off scanning web (HTTP) traffic (slowed down web surfing) and run a full system scan when system is idle for 30 minutes (it was just hammering my HDD). I don't typically surf unsafe websites (I realize accidents can happen) and I simply don't need that deep a level of protection to deal with the possible side effects.

BDAV has been running fine on my PCs, with none of the problems described by others. Again, just my opinion.

I agree with all of what you're specifying EXCEPT clearing the Blocked Senders.

If there are known senders you've gathered in this list, they'll still be blocked even though "No Auto Filtering" is selected ... which is awesome.

I understand a list being processed is CPU/time consuming, but nothing like the full on Filtering you can disable and still avoid known junk mailers.

My opinion. And, since I disabled Filtering of Junk Email in Outlook 2003, my system is running better with BD2011IS.

Thanks for sharing your opinions with us Alan. I asked to remove the blocked senders as this is handled by BitDefender Antispam module -> Spammers. I see no reason why you should keep two blocked senders lists. Nevertheless indeed it's not a mandatory step but a recommended one.

I wasn't aware of the fact that the senders will be blocked from that list with the Auto Filtering feature turned off. I have edited the post, thanks for the feedback

I have recently re-found an issue on Windows regarding that p.o.s. MS Silverlight.

If you have Silverlight installed due to Windows Update settings, uninstall Silverlight, reboot, and re-try what you're trying to accomplish. I think you'll see marked improvements.

Just overall sluggishness that can cause other things to fail making it appear the issue is BitDefender and Outlook.

It's just a suggestion to uninstall Silverlight atop all the other problems - including the one for which this thread was started - because Silverlight is a resource hog beyong belief.

I don't know if this has been the solution or if you and your team have done something with the latest updates to the product , but the problem with Outlook 2007 doesn't seem to occur as frequently as it had before when i first posted this problem.

I'd be interested to know Dan if the team has done something in the latest updates to rectify this problem as the occurrences have dropped significantly.

DanyDan: Are the issues resolved just BD2011 related or BD overall - like BD servers where updates are pulled and such?

I ask because I had issues with BD2010 IS and upgraded to 2011 to no benefit, if not even worse.

I hate to tell you this, but right now I'm completely BD-free - I'm running a free A/V ware that is well trusted and my system is smokingly faster.

I still have three years left on my BD licenses - and I like BD for many, many reasons.

But, I'm not sure I'm ready to uninstall this new ware and re-install/update BD2011 IS all over again just to be disappointed still.

That would surely send me off the deep end.

So, I ask - are the fixes with just the wares? Or, are you also making server corrections for the updates to run faster, as well, and the like?

Two issues, one major - one odd, and I'll be hard-pressed to re-install BD this soon after getting things back in order.

Issue 1: VSSERV over consumes CPU resources bringing my system to a screaming crawl.

Forbid my screensaver kicked in - requiring a passwd to unlock - and VSSERV is running when you want to get back in.

The system was often non-responsive ... appearing to need a hard reboot ... but would eventually come back.

Could not get a straight answer on how to relegate VSSERV to use less CPU.

Issue 2: Shutting down Outlook 2003 requires File -> Exit, re-open, and File -> Exit for the Outlook.exe process to cleanly close

Since completely uninstalling BD, Outlook closes on the first exit AND fast as all getout.

Anyway, I got your email and I just don't have the time or patience to debug this by uninstalling AVG, re-installing BD, etc., etc., etc. to then run the tests for VSSERV's runaway process. I sent in a "supporttool.exe" run a few days ago and haven't heard back on that one alone. I'm just exhausted from all of this and I may come back to BD if AVG causes me issues/concern.

Sorry - I'm just worn out by BD's worsening issues as it grows. I liked the software better when it was just A/V and Firewall. I think it's trying to do too much and, thus, doggin' itself and the system it's on. My opinion.

I have been using the Trial of BD Pro, and with a couple of minor tweaks like you mentioned seems to be running very nicely. With all the security features in some of the full blown suites that can be double up, tripled up with BD, Windows, IE, Outlook, etc, that some overlapping security measures have to be turned off or disabled. I've found this out with the Anitphishing filters of Zone Alarm Free, BD Pro, and FF built in filter, can cause slow downs or conflicts (and had to turn off Zone Alarms), as same could be for Outlook.

AMEN! You & I have had similar experiences. ZA is who I left (after many years) because they had too many hooks in the OS and too many problems/conflicts. Sometimes, in the case of security products anyway, "more" is not necessarily "better." <img class= " />

So far, I am happy with BDAV Pro 2011, from a performance point of view. It gives me an adequate level of protection without messing up system performance.

Right now, I am still learning the product. I like all of the options that are available to me. Sure, the product installs with certain default settings, but as I learn more about what it is doing, I can change those settings to suit my specific preferences. Another user can set it up differently to suit their needs.

Things seem to be going quite now with Outlook and BDTS Dan ,, no slow down or choking on the downloading of mail ,, now i understand others have still ongoing problems , but they seem to be alluding to Outlook 2003 , i don't know if it makes any difference at all , but my problems were with Outlook 2007 not 2003 ,, but the email seems to be downloading fine now , so if there were updates that made a difference then they've hit the mark with my email program.

Believe me ,, and you know me Dan , i will let you know if there's any other problems cropping up ,, thanks for all the time you took with me to rectify the problems i've had in the past with BDTS.
