Domain Wildcards In Whitelists Possible

Options

I just installed BD Antivirus 2011 today. I started visiting several of my favorite web sites and dozens and dozens of pop-ups asking about allowing cookies. (I have ****** control turned off)

When I went to the Whitelist there was close to 100 rules or more, so far. Over time I can see this list growing to 10s of thousands.

Isn't there a way to specify a wildcard for sub-domains? For example:

home.rsforkner.com

family.rsforkner.com

geneology.rsforkner.com

I want to create a single rule like *.rsforkner.com to cover all sub-domains for rsforkner.com. Is there a way to do this or do I just turn off Cookie Control?

Thanks in advance,

Bob Forkner

  • Are you asking about the Whitelist in the Antiphishing Toolbar of BDAV Pro 2011? Because I only have one site in my Whitelist and I went to all 3 of the sites you listed and the toolbar never flagged any of them asking if I wanted to add them to the Whitelist. All 3 sites came right up and displayed.

I must be misunderstanding your question.

  • Sorry if I didn't use the correct term. Perhaps "Whitelist" isn't the right term.

In the main screen of BDAV Pro 2011 I selected Privacy Control, and then the Cookie tab. With Enable Cookie Control checked there is a list of cookies. You can edit each one with a number of options.

Again I fear that I added a measure of confusion with my examples. They are all just examples, not real subdomains, from my family web site. The first real site I ran into was FaceBook.com. There were at least a dozen different subdomains that wanted to add cookies to my system. Each one got a different entry in the "cookie list".

For what it's worth I am using the latest Firefox and the Antiphishing Toolbar doesn't work with the latest version.

    Hope that helps,

    Bob

  • Ah, Okay, now I see. I guess you'll have to wait for someone else to chime in. I've never found it necessary to use that option.

    Sorry,

    Gary

  • Hello,

Follow the steps below to add a certain domain into the list of trusted sites:

    1. Open BitDefender security center

    2. Switch it to Expert View from the Options button

    3. Go to Privacy tab

    4. Go to Cookie tab

    5. Click on the small "+" to add a website

    6. To add an entire domain write: http://*.yahoo.com (example)

If you have any further queries feel free to contact us anytime!

    Regards,

  • Following the steps above I added the following to the Cookie Control. I checked "Allow" and "Both" in the options sections.

I then opened Firefox and went to Facebook. After replying "yes" to several "Cookie Request" messages I closed Firefox and Opened BitDefender.

The following entries were in the Cookie Control list.

    www.facebook.com

    f.facemoods.com

    igor.facemoods.com

    pixel.facebook.com

    0.channel16.facebook.com

It doesn't appear the wildcard is working as I would expect. I should say that I am currently controlling cookies via Firefox. I would not expect that to conflict with BitDefender but then again stranger things have happened.

  • Is the connection to those sites a secure one ? Check for https on the link. I will do few tests and let you know later today or tomorrow.

Try to add: http://*facebook.com and let me know if it's working.

    Regards,

  • I tried using http://*facebook.com (no period after the * ) but it did not change the fact that I still ended up with several FaceBook cookies in the list.

I'll be glad to try helping with this issue but it is not really a necessary part of BitDefender, for me. I'll continue to use the cookie control in Firefox since it provides many different options not available in BitDefender.

    Hi Bob,

I will further investigate and test this matter on my own. Feel free to provide me with any ideas to improve the cookie control filters, features included into Firefox module and not into BitDefender.

    I will await your PM.

Update: To add an entire domain you need to:

    - clear your browser cookies

    - add the domain without http:// or www or anything: simply add: yahoo.com

    - EOF -
