Newbie With An Irritating Problem

Hi all, bombadil1977 here. I have read the forum rules. I am just a normal consumer, purchased bitdefender, cuz it's good. I have a problem on my laptop and want to ask for some help.

If there's a better forum to go in, please let me know.

I have Windows XP Pro on my laptop. Laptops a Sony, <2 yrs old, reformatted with XP Pro. I use Mozilla Firefox. I have had bitdefender a couple weeks now. Have 2011.

Some URLs that I go to trigger another firefox page to open to what I am going to call spam. Behavior is like a pop-up inasmuch as POOF! suddenly I have a new tab or sometimes a new window with a spammy location (e.g findology, gotracking, lynxtrack, gosingles, as the domains, just a few examples). Sometimes a new tab/window opens instantly at a different URL which poofs to one of those examples. It's not a show-stopper, I just hit ctrl-w instantly and go on with what I'm doing. But I think bitdefender should be able to make a solution, just don't know how.

I thought maybe if I copied and pasted the URL into bitdefender's antispam (Manage Spammers list) that would maybe help, it hasn't. I put several of the domains in to privacy control's cookies and scripts domains to be blocked, that hasn't helped. I've been trying myself to make this stop since I bought bitdefender.

If there's a more appropriate place for me to post this, let me know. I have searched around the forum too. I obviously don't understand what I'm doing with this URL-spam thing. Any ideas will be helpful. What am I missing?

Rank amateur here, and please excuse if this is a little too obvious. But I assume you've scanned to be sure you don't have a virus or malware? If I was getting behavior like that, I would assume I was infected.

Also just to mention, I recently tried Firefox for the first time and was surprised to find it was very buggy and crashed a lot. Do you get similar behavior in other browsers?

That's all I got. I'm sure somebody who knows what they're talking about will be along shortly.

Spot-on question... I have done 3 deep-system 3 full-system & 2 quick scans. A virus or malware is what I thought I had too, prompted me to get the software actually.

I have not used other browsers, except when IE comes up associated with links...it occurs with IE too.

It occurs pro'ly 5% of the time. From yahoo, say I'll open a new tab to read a story and it happens. Seems more with yahoo or links from emails in yahoo or in gmail, but not all the time by any measure, maybe 5%. Maybe I'm getting inured to it hehehe.

Seems to occur whether I have the firefox antiphising plug-in enabled or not.

Seems to occur whether I have game mode enabled or not.

Curious eh, admittedly not a security whiz though.

To make sure the pop-ups are not caused by viruses,please send me by PM a set of logs (BDSI and GMER) as described in this article.

Please send me a sample file to see if they are infected or not.

I want you to help me. What do you mean when you say "send me a sample file"?

The sent logs show the following 2 suspicious files.

I have also read your post but to be honest I can't see the association between Antispam and Firefox. Are you talking about Antiphishing module as this is the module in charge of the suspicious websites? The Antispam module is filtering unwanted emails received in your inbox.

However you should first work on this with Cristi to make sure your PC is clean.

Good point DanyDan. The first thing I did was whenever one of the new tabs would pop up, I would click the 'report as phishing' under the AntiPhishing tab in my firefox. I did that for a week or so, at the moment of looking at the new spam page/URL.

The sent files are clean and besides those files the logs doesn't show anything suspicious.

At this moment BitDefender doesn't have a pop-up blocker.

As a solution would be for you to use a custom pop-up blocker available over the internet.

Thanks mate. Ever since I switched to Chrome, the problem has been gone!
