Bitdefender 2011 Problems

I have been using BD for many years, I recently installed 2011 IS on my system to test before I install it on my customers PC's...

1) The PC sits idle for most of the day, I do this at different times, I get home and go to use my system BD decides to do a system scan (which takes up 100% of the process) and at the same time it decides to do a update, even though I have my settings set to do it once every 12 hours... This is not a quick scan it is more like a full scan, it takes about 1-2 hours to complete.......

2) I did my first "deep system scan" which I scheduled to start at 1:00 am every 3 days as I always have done in the past versions. I get up this morning and BD is still doing the scan and has 60 hours to go to finish???

I use Win XP pro with all of the patches.... I have to say I am disappointed in BD last few versions, 2010 constantly crashes, disables the realtime protection and corrupted a 16bit database application while doing a scan & which I had to rebuild....

Hello,

With complex tasks, the scanning process will take some time and it will work best if you close all other programs. That is why it is best for you to schedule such tasks when you are not using your computer and it has gone into the idle mode. To see the schedule of a specific task or to modify it, right-click the task and select Schedule. If you are already in a task's Properties window, select the Scheduler tab. You can see the task schedule, if any.

When scheduling a task, you must choose one of the following options:

● No - launches the task only when the user requests it.

● Once - launches the scan only once, at a certain moment. Specify the start date and time in the Start Date/Time fields.

● Periodically - launches the scan periodically, at certain time intervals(minutes, hours, days, weeks, months) starting with a specified date and time.

● On system startup - launches the scan at the specified number of minutes after a user has logged on to Windows.

LOL, so what did you tell me that I already did not say, it is just like BD support to say non-sense instead of dealing with the issue at hand... Telling me how to schedule a task!?

I have a 40GB HD with only 1/4 occupied by programs and data, in case you can not do math, that is 10GB of programs and data on the HD, 70 HOURS to scan? When 2010 took 2-3 hours?

This is unheard of, maybe you should escalate the issue to your 2nd or 3rd level support..

I had an impatient client that was trying to upgrade her unit to 2011 from 2010, she got on the chat support feature, because it was not allowing her to install the 2011 stating that her KEY was invalid, the chat person had to escalate the issue to another support level because she/he (the chat support person) could not figure it out... My client finally called me and I re-installed the 2010 version, and explained to my client that it was a bug in 2011 , it does not remove all of the registry keys and needed to run the Removal tool to fix the issue. I have since convinced my client to stick with 2010 until I had a chance to test it... The issue was a common problem that the chat support person should have known!!!!

Yes, the scan can take that long if certain options are checked (i.e. Scan inside archives). That is why I guided you on reading the manual about types of scans and the scan options.

I understand your frustration however I do not find it appropriate nor respectful to patronize me.

Furthermore regarding the customer that was not able to install please keep in mind that using a registration key without online backup will generate an error message at registration if you are using an installation kit with online backup.

Having an older HD with low RPM and Serial ATA (rotation per minute) will influence the scan time. There were few issues with the scanning time however were resolved and the update released on the market so make sure you have the latest BitDefender updates installed.

How long the scan actually took? Do you have any infected files found at scan ? Try to right click on a folder and start a contextual scan and let me know if you see the same long time displayed until the scan finish.

As you haven't noticed the link for the BitDefender manual, allow me to quote it for you:

Advanced users might want to take advantage of the scan settings BitDefender offers. The scanner can be set to scan only specific file extensions, to search for specific malware threats or to skip archives. This may greatly reduce scanning times

and improve your computer's responsiveness during a scan.

● Scan only new and changed files. By scanning only new and changed files, you may greatly improve overall system responsiveness with a minimum trade-off in security.

● Scan inside archives. Scanning inside archives is a slow and resource-intensive process, which is therefore not recommended for real-time protection. Archives containing infected files are not an immediate threat to the security of your system. The malware can affect your system only if the infected file is extracted from the archive and executed without having real-time protection enabled.

As a conclusion: YES, the scanning time may take up to 10 hours considering that:

- you have an old HDD

- you may have certain scan options enabled

Provide me with the following information:

- try to reproduce the issue with all types of scan: Deep, Full, Quick and Contextual

- the BitDefender build (right click on BitDefender icon in system tray and select About)

Regarding your update issue please note:

This is indeed the way BitDefender 2011 was designed (just like 2010, 2009 and 2008).

- signature updates 5 min from start-up

- product update 30 min from start-up

- signature + product update 60 min from start-up

After this, it follows the schedule set in the BD interface.

The reasoning behind all this would be the following:

- an antivirus without the latest signatures is more likely not to detect / block an infection

- product patches / updates can be applied to rectify product bugs / incorrect behaviours

I understand that you did not develop the SW, but again I feel you are patronizing me! I have been working with computers since 1986 in the mono processor days. Developers think that the customers are here to trouble shoot issues for your organization, when in fact we expect a working piece of SW. When we had a new piece of SW to implement we tested in all types of environments prior to deploying into the working environment.

This is an excuse, when I installed 2011 all of the settings where (notice I said where) the same, and 2010 only took 38 minutes and 57 seconds to complete, yes this is a deep scan in 2010 with the exact same settings, So what you are saying is that 2010 was always defective and people where always unprotected?

How long the scan actually took? Do you have any infected files found at scan ? Try to right click on a folder and start a contextual scan and let me know if you see the same long time displayed until the scan finish.

I do not know I had to use my PC, since I could not even cancel the task I had to manually turn off my laptop with the power button...

Again this is not totally true, the laptop stays idle for most of the day, only when I go to use it after 5-6 hours it decides to do this....

After this, it follows the schedule set in the BD interface.

Forgot to add, your (per se) uninstall_tool_2011 does not remove all registry keys, I still have the "Bitdefender update server v2" installed..... This is found under the services mmc..............

I am still waiting on the information I requested. Do you see the same scan time for all types of scan ? What is the BitDefender build ?

With all the respect but you do read between the lines.

You need to actually wait for a scan to finish to see how long that scan took. The estimated time left will be recalculated at start and also during the actual scan.

No, I'm not saying that: that's your conclusion, not mine.

Were you next to her when she did the reinstall ? What installation kit did she used? I was also explaining the reason why she must have received the message saying that the license key is invalid. We have two types of installation kits as follows:

1. with online backup

2. without online backup

A registration key for type 1 will work on type 2. A registration key for type 2 will NOT work on type 1 installation kit.

Please provide me with the information requested in my previous post, otherwise I will not be able to assist you further.
