[resolved]Credit Card Protection?

I have BitDefender Total Security 2011, and I'm concerned about my credit card info getting out.

I once had Norton Internet Security, and they had this built in to their product. You'd punch in the last few digits of your credit card number, and if you ordered anything over the internet with that number, a popup would come up and tell you that your card was being accessed. You'd have to OK it, and then give a password to say that I am doing the transaction.

If BitDefender has this, then I'm not seeing it. I've been all over. If BitDefender doesn't have it, then it should! <_<

Hello,

The feature you are interested into is also part of BitDefender 2010 or later. The feature is called Privacy Control. One of its sub-menus is Identity Control. The Identity control module monitors web (HTTP), chat (instant messaging) and e-mail (SMTP) traffic flowing out of your computer for what might be personal information such as credit card numbers, SSN's and other user-defined strings (e.g. bits / parts of passwords).

For more information about how to use this module please read the offline manual found in the installation folder of all our products. The default location is:

C:\Program Files\BitDefender\BitDefender 2011\Support\offlinemanual\html

Most excellent! 279 manuals I knew nothing about!

I'll let you know in a day or so when/if I find the right buttons to push. Privacy Controls huh? That makes way too much sense. I'd been through the Firewall (sense I figured that would be a Firewall function) area till I was blue in the face! I just knew that BitDefender wasn't going to let Norton get something they didn't have.

I was having a lot of problems with BitDefender on my old installation which was a Windows XP built, but it was an old installation with many years on it. But sense I upgraded to Windows 7 64 bit with a fresh install, I must say that it's been superb!

Give me a couple of days and I'll let you know when I find the section pertinent to my needs. Then we can put this puppy to bed! Thanks again!

OK... Thanks but I've found it. Is there anyway to put a password so that someone would have to punch in a password to OK a transaction. (Otherwise it would not allow it to go through without a password?)

I could probably find it, but I'm lazy, and you seem to know your way around. Plus I'm going to order something soon, and it would be the perfect time to test it out.

Hi,

No, it's not possible to have a password set and asked for each time you try to transmit credit card information. However, you can protect the data enclosed into the Privacy module within BitDefender if you set a password for the product so no settings can be changed. To set a password you need to switch BitDefender to Expert View from the Option button then go to General -> Settings.

OK... Now I'm confused..... Yesterday I had the last 4 numbers of my credit card in there. (I wanted to make sure I did that before I ordered something.) Well, last night I ordered THIS burner from Newegg thoroughly expecting it to ask me if I wanted this transmitted?

It asked nothing, and didn't alert me that the credit card info was being transmitted or anything. Did I need to punch in more than my last 4 digits of the Credit card? I did everything you said in the picture in your post HERE except the Rule . I may not be the smartest kid on the block, but I thought I had it right. Here's a screenshot of what I reviewed this morning. Did I need something in the "Rule Description"? I'm taking it that I do, but then that part anyway is viewable to anyone that has access to my computer. BTW.... I have no password on my BitDefender.

Regarding the Privacy / Identity control please note:

- when you enter the partial credit card number BitDefender will block that specific string (information) to be sent from your PC via: websites, email or Instant messaging.

- try to add the credit card info and also select "All Users";

- rule description is something for you to remember what you use the rule for;

- when trying to send an email containing the number from the rule, BitDefender will block the message and will send you an email with the subject: BitDefender Identity Control intercepted personal information. The message states:

Information that you defined as personal information in the BitDefender Identity Control module has been detected in an e-mail sent from this computer. The e-mail has not been sent because not all the recipients are excepted. You can modify the target strings or exclude an e-mail recipient from scanning by accessing Privacy Control > Identity Control > Exclusions.

The fields you need to complete and what these must contain:

- Rule name: any name (i.e.) My credit card Visa1;

- Rule Type: select from the drop-down menu: credit card number;

- Rule Data: the actual credit card number (or part of it - i.e. 54001234) - I would recommend you adding at least 6-8 digits from the credit card to avoid having messages blocked due to matches not related to the credit card information or online purchases.

- Filter web: Checked;

- Filter e-amil: Checked;

- Filter IM: Checked;

- Match whole words: Checked;

- Match Case: NOT Checked;

- Choose from which user(s) you want to apply this rule: choose All Users.

- you can also try to Google the number you added as a rule. The search will be blocked with the message (Google is just an example):

OK... Got you, and Thanks DanyDan. Apparently by what you're saying, I should have chose All Users. Was that the only thing that I did wrong? I'm taking it that the "Rule Description" could have been left blank but I'll add an extra something there anyway. Plus, I'll add more of the credit card number to avoid any false positives. I'd have added the whole thing, but on my old Norton Internet Security, that was visible and I didn't know what to expect. I didn't want any Joe Blow to come to the house and get into my computer and see the credit card #.

If Joe Blow were a computer hacker, could he hack my BitDefender and find my Credit Card info? I know that all I saw was "Type Here To Change", but then again I'm not a computer hacker! I can find my way around OK, but get into the heavy stuff, I'm lost!
Another question.... will it just block my Credit Card number, or will it give me a question asking me to OK it? And if I were to OK it, I'd have to enable some kind of password on there.... correct? I mean I don't want Joe Blow to come in and order a bunch of stuff from Newegg. " /> Obviously, sometimes I might want my Credit Card info transmitted... but only if I say so.

I did like you said, and Googled the number I entered into the "Rule Data", and *POOF* I got the message... But if I added a couple of 0s before or after the actual 4 digits I googled, the regular search came up! Good to know!

I've updated my Credit Card info to 8 digits, & filled in the "Rule Description" to say Visa, and updated it to "All Users"...

I finally had a chance to use my credit card last night. My BD 2011 was configured properly, but only had the last 8 digits of my Credit card number. I believe but when I punched the OK button, I was expecting a notification saying the credit card number was going out, and possibly something asking it indeed I wanted it to do that. I got nothing other than the email saying that I had paid my bill. Note that I sent an email to myself the last 8 digits of my Credit Card to myself, and I got an email saying that it had been blocked, but when I added a couple of digits before the number, it didn't recognize it as being a credit card flag, and went ahead and sent it. Should I put in the whole number? And what of the 3 digit Secure code? Should this be included as well?

I used the last 8 digits of my credit card number, but didn't use the additional 3 digit Secure code that Visa has. I'm stumped. I'm going to put it in again to make 100% sure I had the numbers right before, but what should I expect when I have everything right? I'm hoping that it'll ask if I want this to go through. Obviously there might be times that I'd want the card number to be used, but other times I'd hope that BD would block it until it gets confirmation to go ahead and send it.

What can I expect to see if everything is done properly? Will it just block it? Or would it ask me if I want to do this? I'd hope that it would ask me if this is legit.

I'll send snapshots of something once I know what you'd like to see.

The module is to block any attempts to send private info via the Internet. You have a button called "Exclusions" where you can add the sites allowed.

Identity Control protects you against the theft of sensitive data when you are online.

Consider a simple example: you have created an Identity Control rule that protects your credit card number. If a spyware software somehow manages to install on your computer, it cannot send your credit card number via e-mail, instant messages or web pages. Moreover, your children cannot use it to buy online or reveal it to people they met on the Internet.

Also I would recommend you to take a look at the offline manuals stored in your PC at:

C:\Program Files\BitDefender\BitDefender 2011\Support\offlinemanual\html

Bottom line: you won't get a notification, it will block the number from being sent.
