[resolved]I've Just Updated My Wife's Laptop...

I've just updated my wife's Tosiba laptop from BitDefender 2010 to BitDefender 2011.

She's running Vista that has all it's Windows updates intact as of today.

SP 2, with 2 gig RAM

Windows Vista Home Edition 32 bit.

Something strange happened during the installation of BitDefender 2011. It complained that avast! was on there. I installed avast! awhile back, because her complimentary version of Norton Internet Security had run out, and I wanted something in place until I got your BitDefender 2010 installed. I know that I uninstalled avast! Why would it show up? It also complained about McAfee being in there. It's just their SiteAdvisor, and not the full McAfee that's installed. I'm running it myself, and consider it to be a nice touch with BitDefender's Search Advisor.

Worse yet, she's now complaining that BitDefender keeps asking to reboot the computer for no obvious reason. There's a general sluggishness in it that she didn't notice before. She's found that turning off the auto-update seems to help on the AV from wanting to reboot every 5 minutes. Is there any way of changing the auto-update to every hour, instead of the factory settings?

I believe that there are still entries associated with Avast and McAfee. Note that both these security solutions must be uninstalled using their removal tool. Also keep in mind that you should restart the PC after each uninstall.

Follow the steps explained in THIS article then send me a PM with the generated log file.

OK Dan, I'm now logged in on her computer and everything seems to be OK, though I haven't done much surfing around. I'll try to reproduce the problems she was having last night, & finish that support tool and PM you. If I can't reproduce it in an hour, I'll just send you the log without reproducing the problems. I've even reestablished the auto update that she said helped her when she had it enabled.

I have yet to see anything asking to reboot the 'puter. If I can't get it to screw up, I'll just send it as-is.

- Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

- McAfee Security Scan

- SpywareBlaster 4.2

- McAfee SiteAdvisor

- Spybot - Search & Destroy

- SUPERAntiSpyware

- GearDRVS (Symantec Pc-Tool software)

To be honest I am amazed that your PC is still running properly with all these software installed.

I recommend you uninstall ALL including BitDefender as explained in my email.

One thing I must say that she is adamant about keeping her McAfee SiteAdvisor. Indeed I'm using it myself with no problems.

Now the one thing with Avast!, I'd like to solve because it's not in her Add/Remove programs. It's simply not listed. :blink:

Where have I mentioned Avast ?

Plus you can't use both Site-advisers: from BitDefender and McAfee. It will slow down your browsing and even crashing Internet Browsers.

I have sent you the links and instructions on how to clean your wife's PC.

If she wishes to use Symantec Site Adviser then you must disable the one in BitDefender. You can find it under the Antivirus tab.

OK.. I'll do it, but first I'll talk to her first. It's her computer. But I can safely get rid of Spybot S&D, Spyware Blaster, Malwarebytes, McAfee Security Scan. But I'll keep SUPERAntiSpyware for the time being, as she was highly recommended this product by someone who is supposed to know what they're even doing. (Note that I don't subscribe to this program myself, but she seems to like it.) I'll talk to her tonight when she gets home. But that's the one program that does run at startup. Don't really see the sense in that either. Also, I'll let her run whichever Site Advisor she wants, and get back to you. (Though I'm running both ATM, and don't see any slowdown on my machine.)

I've got a question though... Malwarebytes, Spybot S&D are both "on demand" programs. Why would they interfere with the proper running of her machine? This I don't understand. They don't even run until I tell them to run.

The Advast issue I took for granted as I saw it listed when I tried installing BD 2011 in the first place. :wacko:

Interesting update. I've gone through all the things listed so far to a "T".

When I came to the part of reinstalling the downloaded installation of BD 2011 it came up with that silly Avast 5 again. So I went ahead and uninstalled it (whatever it was!) Rebooted computer afterward, and installation is running without a hitch.
