Vsserv.exe

Hello.

I have noticed that the vsserv.exe process is using a very high amount of RAM. It is using a Commit Size of 568 MB. This is very large and very unacceptable. When it does this, it takes away from the ability of any other processes being able to use RAM, forcing them to use the pagefile. I do realize that the Commit is not active RAM usage, but what it is, is being reserved for vsserv.exe and not allowing it to be used by any other programs/processes. The active amount of RAM being used is ~10mb at any given time. Thus, having a Commit (Reserved RAM Amount) of 568MB is very substantial and degrades from the rest of the systems performance, by limiting RAM usage by any other processes. Is there a way to stop vsserv.exe from using such a high Commit (Reserved Amount), in my RAM.

Please give as many details on your system as possible. It will help BD experts to find the solution...

You could check the forum too, vsserv has plenty of problems.

Maybe try a repair/desinstall operation, start... program... bitdefender... repair, and so on... maybe it will fix the problem? (I'm not sure...)

System Specs:

Windows 7 Ultimate x64

i7 920

6GB Corsair XMS3 DDR 3 1600 (Triple Channel)

Don't think any other system spec's would be relevant to RAM usage by a process.

As for how old this issue is, as of today 17 Nov 2010 it is using 500+ MB Commit, and previously (Last week), it was using maybe 200MB of Commit. I have not done anything to my system since.

I have looked around on the forums, the only vsserv.exe issues i found pertain to high cpu usage and not ram usage.

Alright, so after running a system scan. vsserv.exe is now using a Commit Size of 704MB and an active usage of ~15MB. Nearly 1GB of ram reserved for one program, that boasts low system resource usage..........I do not call nearly 1GB of ram, as being a low resource usage.

I have the same issue. Ive got 3GB RAM, Quad core Intel 6600 machine.

vsserv.exe typically levels out around 1.3GB committed memory use according to Taskmanager.

It constantly increases until approx that point.

It also use quite alot of threads and handles (approx 120 threads and 3500-4500 handles) which also seems quite exessive!

Hi,

As an additional information, vssserv holds committed memory until approx 1.3gb and stays around there.

However it leaks handles at an rate of 2-3 per second. Now currently vsserv.exe holds 140.000+ handles.

Ive looked in other posts about the procedure of sending you information for debugging the problem.

When checking the contents of the files generated (which by the way took at least 1.5 hour to generate), I see that it contains identifyable information that I do not feel comfortable about sharing.

It must be possible to see in source code where handles are allocated in a speed of 2-3 handles per second, and to give some good guesses as to what can be done to handle errorsituations so they do in fact clean up after themselfs.

Would an debugging mode in vssserv.exe not be practical, so when it notice error / exception situations (ie. conflicts with files or storage or memory or something else), that it log those.

Without the logs I'm afraid that my hands are tied. To answer your question, yes, it may be possible to check the source code and see however it's not possible to do this to each and every user, it will be more time consuming and less effective. The Suppor Tool is the first step in starting to troubleshoot any issue that may occur with BitDefender.

Yes that is correct, vsserv consumes alot of RAM, and the longer my computer is on, the more ram it will reserve. If I run a scan, it will increase its ram usage alot faster than if I just let my computer sit idle. I replied to the email i received, with the log that was created. But I am currently uploading it now to that link you gave. Once it is uploaded I will send you a PM.

Well I tried the recommended fix, it did not help at all. The vsserv.exe process still uses alot of RAM. It still uses a ton of RAM when you begin a scan and the Commit Size increases greatly. Upon stopping a scan, it does not release this Commit Size thus it prevents the system or any other programs from using the RAM. When a scan is completed, it should release this reserved RAM back to the system.

Well since there are no further updates on why vsserv.exe is using such large amounts of ram, and not releasing the ram after it is done scanning. I have uninstalled bitdefender, as 800+ MB of RAM being Reserved by this process is ridiculous. It should not be using 800+ MB of RAM when the system is idle. This does impact the performance of any computer greatly.

Mr.OPR: Should I understand you have the same issue now, with BitDefender 2011 ? What are your PC details ? Processor, RAM ?
