Bitdefender 2012 - Full Scan Freezes My System

I suspect I have a virus of some sort. Some of my executable files are now hidden (show hidden won't reveal them either, but shortcuts still work) and other settings (like showing file extensions) have been turned on, and not by me.

So I checked to make sure I have the latest definitions (I do) and I ran a full scan in Bitdefender 2012. After 2 1/2 hours, more than 3/4 done with the scan, it locked up my system. My only option was a reboot. I noticed it had found 2 things infected when it was locked up, but I guess it didn't save that info after the reboot. I was intending to try again in Safemode, but Bitdefender won't launch in Safemode, at least not for me.

What I should I do?

I have also observed my Windows 7 system locking up during the full system scan since I installed the 2012 product yesterday. Three attempts to run full system scan; three locked up results.
