Autoscan

Hi,

The autoscan on my setup (windows 8, bitdefender is 2013) seems to be running every time I come back to the PC. I told it to do a full scan (which took hours) in the expectation that it would stop the regular running but it hasn't. Given the machine has had a full scan what on earth is it doing, surely everything coming in is scanned and therefore the auto scan of the system is just a "we're not sure if we caught everything so we'll just keep doing it" approach. You can turn off the autoscan (it is described in the help) but then BD complains that there is a problem (in other words masking any real "other" problem) and changes to user mode not autopilot.

I want my machine to run efficiently and not spend its time repeatedly checking what it has just checked. Any advice would be welcome.

I also want to be able to have the Big white "B" in my system tray REMAIN white, and not turn yellow when I"m not in Autoscan mode. How do I do that?

In some scense, that may be a way to put it, but it may be more in context of updated virus signatures may now pick up on what previously was considered a malware free file. Since it runs in the background and only during idle times, it really isn't causing your PC to run inefficiently.

Hi Columbo, thanks for your input, that is a fair point but does give rise to the prospect of being infected without knowing it and just hoping that they come up with a new signature and re-scan the lot before it does any damage!

I came in today and the autoscan was running, no surprise there, it took me about 10 minutes to get control of my PC, the autoscan did not stop when I tried to use the machine and was very difficult to stop via any normal method. This is not the sort of behaviour I expect (nor paid for) from a product designed to protect and help me not hinder me. Over the years I have used a number of anti-virus products but few have irritated me as much as bitdefender, the support is almost non-existant, it seems to be updating all the time (am I to believe that new virus' are discovered every 30 mins?), the incessant requests to re-boot and the machine crippling autoscan (which I have now turned off and will have to live with the persistent warning that something is wrong, surely I should be able to indicate that I have seen the warning and don't want to see that one again).

Also, Auto Scan will only run when there are free resources and it will not interfere with your activity.

The Auto Scan icon will be present in System tray and you will know that is running(only for Windows 8). Make a little test: let the PC go in idle and Auto Scan will start the process. Then, move the mouse and you notice the icon will disappear.

I think I know what autocscan should do. Running, when PC is idle. But when I start working again it should stop! But it's still running and giving huge impact on PC. CPU and hard drive. I can hardly work. It takes forever to open Bitdefender and stop autoscan. Now I set Autoscan off but that's not solution I want. Is there some setting that will tell Autoscan to stop when I begin to work?

Windows 8 64 bit Pro, Bitdefender Internet security 2013, Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600, 4Mb Ram.

BD auto scan wake s up my external HDs WHY? it should scan the most common locations, i hope in the future i can choose or disable the locations to auto scan.(srry for my bad english i m dutch)

The Autoscan will scan the entire PC, including all the devices connected to it (including external HDDs). I will forward your request to our product manager.
