My laptop stopped running Windows 7 Professional, and I believe it is due to a virus or other malware (I can't identify any program I installed right before I had this problem). I'm not sure what is causing it, so I'll describe the symptoms.
My computer is a Gateway Laptop (NV57H05h) with Intel Core i3-2310M processor, integrated graphics, 6GB ram. I am running Bitdefender Total Security 2013.
When I boot up my computer, I log into my account and subsequently get only a black screen with a cursor (on one occasion, the computer was stuck on the "welcome" screen all night instead). When the problem first occurred, I was unable to get to the log in screen, but using the Windows tools (including system restore) I got to the log in screen.
Safe mode works, but safe mode with networking is slow to the point of being unusable. Bit Defender does not work in safe mode. Using safe mode I uninstalled a graphics driver (in case it was corrupted), but that didn't solve the problem.
I tried the Bit Defender Rescue Mode, but it was unable to update (it also couldn't install Firefox). A system scan (without any update) did not reveal any viruses.
I can boot into Ubuntu 12.04 without trouble, so I don't think it is a hardware issue.
While in the black screen with a cursor, I can press shift to get the "activate sticky keys" window (after a delay).
One time (other times it didn't do anything), using CTRL ALT DELETE gave a window:
Failure to display security and shut down options
The logon process was unable to display security and logon options when CTRL+ALT+DELETE was pressed. If the operating system does not respond, press ESC or restart the computer by using the power switch.
The following window also appeared once:
dwm.exe -- Bad Image
C:\Windows\system32\dwmcore.dll is either not designed to run on windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support.
Sometimes, I get a blue screen error. A report (obtained by booting into safe mode) gives the following information.
