I am a Bitdefender Total Security 2013 user and I am very scared by recent developments.
I believe it was the evening before yesterday that I got the black box with the red circled "X" inside of it, telling me that "Bitdefender has detected a virus on my computer". I clicked on the notice right away, hoping that I would be able to nip any potential trouble in the bud. However, when I clicked on the notice it did not show me a log of the event like it usually does. It just took me to the Events browser in Bitdefender. What was even more suspicious is that no corresponding "Red" class event in the Antivirus logs. This was suspicious to be sure, but being foolishly optimistic and having had an excellent experience with Bitdefender so far, I decided that it was probably taken care of.
However, it seems not to be the case. Yesterday morning my Yahoo! account was compromised, with unauthorized access from Venezuela. Whatever this thing was attempted to send spam to everyone in my contact lists, and these messages, while reported as "failed to deliver" and coming from my account by Yahoo's mailer-daemon, did not produce messages in my "Sent" folder. I have had to change my password twice due to detected security risks. However, I feel that has been ineffective as I believe a virus/spyware has truly invaded my computer. Today. Steam games that used to run flawlessly now suffer from unbearable slowdown. Team Fortress 2, which I run at relatively high setting without much problem, now has it's framerates in the gutter even on simple, resource-chea.p maps. I have not been able to find any information on this and it seems that malicious software may be responsible.
Just now I am running a system scan, and upon hitting the directory <C:\windows\winsxs\>, the "estimated time remaining" displayed by the scanning wizard skyrocketed up to ~30 hours. While this subsided in short order, I do not remember the program ever displaying this behavior, and I think it may be the result of malicious software perhaps tampering with the virus scan in order to prevent itself or its components from being detected. Is it possible for Bitdefender to be compromised or hijacked by malicious software in this manner?
I do not know what is happening, but I do know that something isn't right. If my suspicions are true, I shudder to think what could be done with my other accounts and personal information. I would appreciate some assistance as soon as possible on this issue.
