Windows.edb

I turned on my computer today and bitdefender display 98 "Infected File Detected "notifications. It states that "Windows.edb has been detected as infected. Bitdefender could not clean this item. Your computer in not virus-free."

When I click on the "help"button, nothing happens.

I have run a virus scan using Anti-Malwarebytes and AVG. The both say my computer is virus free. Is this a false-positive? If so, why did it just start happening...I have had bitdefender installed for over a year.

Finally, what can I do to either: get rid of the "virus" or stop the hundreds of alerts Bitdefender is sending me.

I have a very similar problem. Usually about 50 error messages which state "Infected file detected". Various files in each description - as an example:

The file c:\programdata\microsoft\search\data\applications\windows\windows.edb has been detected as infected. Bit Defender could not clean this item. Your computer is not virus free.

However I have a green tick in the circle and the comment beside it "You are currently protected. There are no issues to fix." :wacko:

This does not come up every day - perhaps every 2nd or 3rd day.

Due to the fact that the edb file generated by Windows Search is different for each client, it is quite complicated to do anything without at least a detection name, if not the actual file.

This same thing just started happening with me. There is no other information provided, as requested by Catalin Salgau. Where else could one go to get that information? And why would Bitdefender say you are protected and virus free when the anti virus section shows over 50 viruses and says you aren't virus free? Sounds like a software issue with the Bitdefender program.

For the record, I disabled the windows search service and deleted the windows,edb file. Would that get rid of the virus?

If you receive detections only inside windows.edb, chances are that it is a false positive and not an actual problem.

Do try and provide a detection name when you get a chance. For all we know, you could all be seeing the same false positive.

All of the detections are inside windows.edb. So how can the program get around detecting these false positives?

As I stated earlier, this file is generated by Windows Search. The file is created in relation to the indexed files and, as such, we cannot predict or replicate this on our side.

Please provide detected files or detection names.

We'll see if we can do something about it <when> we have something to work on.

In the meantime, if you would like to leave Windows Search enabled, you should be able to safely add windows.edb to your scanning exclusion list and re-enable the service.

In order to remove the infected objects from your computer you need to reset the Windows Update and Windows Search services by following these steps:

. Disable the Bitdefender real-time protection and/or any other active security solution(s) that you are using;

. Open the Run box (by pressing CTRL+R or by going to "Start" > "Run...");

. In the "Open" input box type "services.msc" (without the ");

. Press the "OK" button or hit ENTER;

. Locate the "Windows Update" service, right click on the entry and choose "Restart" from the dropdown menu;

. Locate the "Windows Search" service and restart it as well.

In order to disable the antivirus protection,please open Bitdefender and click the "Settings" button in the upper side part of the interface"; In the new window go to "Antivirus" > "Shield"tab and click on "Turn off" under On-access scanning.Select the time interval that suites your troubleshooting needs and click "OK" . The On-access scanning should be enabled back after finishing the troubleshooting procedure.
