After purchasing an update to Bitdefender Total Security, I clicked on the update link, which ironically was titled "Installing Bitdefender - Can't Get Any Easier Than This". Immediately upon clicking on it, multiple Windows Explorer pages opened faster than I could close them. A computer repair guru said that the link contained malware that corrupted the computer registry and forced it to open everything in Windows Explorer.
Bitdefender has been removed from the computer, an alternate security program installed, which does not slow down the system, and I have requested a refund from Bitdefender. [but have not heard from them]
