On Access Scanning Button Greyed Out

I am using Bitdefender Total Security 2013 and running OS Windows 7 Ultimate. When I logged on this morning my Windows 7 Action Center Icon had a message saying Bitdefender and the Firewall were not on. I rebooted and found that in the Antivirus settings that the On-Access Scanning button was in the permissive mode. I attempted to move slider to Normal with no result. I checked the firewall settings screen and found Intrusion Detection System turned off.
I was able to turn it on and when I returned to the Antivirus settings I found On-Access Scanning in Normal but button is greyed out. Latest virus signatures have been downloaded.
