Bitdefend Giving Redundent Message About Windows Defender Update

Options

I just upgraded to the total security version and have since i first installed been getting a message that "I have a critical vulnerability"

That vulnerability is windows defender's update from windows update which won't install because windows defender is disabled.

I ran into the problem with windows defender not being able to be re-enabled since I installed Mal-ware bytes anti malware pro < Yes pro, The firewall included always scanning pro version (had to clarify)

My pc runs great with these two modules simultaneously. However, I can't stand things out of my control, Which leads me to me problem.

Bit defender will not clear this message about the "critical" update. I clear it/mark it as read, and not 5 minutes later..there it is again...a big red 1 in my HUD.

Any ideas and help will be appreciated.

Thanks

Windows Defender for Win 7 or 8?

I had that problem with Windows Defender in Windows 7 triggering reports but as it is not needed when running BD and MBAM you can just turn it off. That stopped all further problems for me.

Of course if you have Windows 8 it shouldn't be running alongside Bitdefender.

It is in regard to windows 8.1 and Bit defender total security.

When I loaded Mbam It ceased to load windows defender properly, I can't change the settings in the UI as It just freezes the window.

So Windows defender is broken. I've tried to uninstall both BD and MBAM then let it get the updates then shut it off. But It still froze the Ui every time I attempted to make changes.

Windows 8 has no option to turn off those updates (as far as i know)

And the updates just keep coming, as if I'm using W.D.

My PC runs fantastically otherwise. It's just the ###### "1" in the dock. That sucker never stays gone for longer then 20 minutes. I can delete the notice, I can Read the notice. But it continually Pops back up with several redundant messages that I have a critical update I need to attend to.

    Quite the eye sore.

  • I hate that WD <img class=" /> i wish one could delete it easily off your system..

I don't get this. The first thing that should have happened when you installed Bitdefender was Windows Defender should have been turned off. Besides, I don't understand why you would install Malwarebytes anyways. If you haven't seen this, I'd suggest checking it out:

    http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti...623#commentList

This was great software. We used it all the time, but now they bundle in the easylife app adware that redirects you to a google looking page. The results there are all adware/spyware. Why malwarebytes? Why?

It now disregards some malware it used to label as Potentially Unwanted Programs (PUPs)and even includes the offending toolbars as downloads with their product. When asked why they no longer classified the PUPs as malware, Malwarebytes claimed the downloads are easy to uninstall. That is just flat out WRONG. They also claim that some people may want those toolbars; but, I can't think of anyone that wants to infect their system with known malware.

Do not even try the free version. I downloaded this to try. I didn't buy it and left it installed. The software constantly reminded me that its settings were out of date, trying to get me to update and buy. This went on for 2 months. Finally, it installed some "internet security" fake program trying to tell me that I had a blaster worm, etc. I uninstalled Malwarebytes and now no more fake program. How cheeesy and MALCIOUS ITSELF!

I purchased Malwarebytes on 14 April 2013, installed it and was pretty sure I was protected (as I was using another program as well). On 15 April 2013 I returned to my desk after my evening meal to settle down to the evening's work as I had deadlines for the the following morning. The minute I tried to boot up the programs I needed to use, a load of 'blocked' Trojan messages filled the screen and I couldn't do anything. It took me nearly all night to get round the problem - even after I found on Twitter a message from the Malwarebytes people saying that they'd issued an update which gave false positives. I couldn't reboot properly, I couldn't access the Internet - Nightmare City. Never again - it would have been easier to cope with a piece of malware.

    And my personal favorite:

It seemed to be causing some problems, so I removed it and somehow my Zone Alarm Firewall was disabled. It was so bad that I had to go back and download a new copy of Zone Alarm 11.0 and install that. Not really sure what actually happened, but didn't want to operate with the firewall working. I had the program on 2 different computers, and they both came up not working properly today. Really think Twice about installing this program, since it may end up causing malfunctions on your computer. My computers had been running fine and installed this for extra protection, but somehow it seemed to have cause a problem. After removing this program and restarting computer, it started OK and the Zone Alarm firewall started to.

Sooo, what have we learned today? Dump Malwarebytes as fast as you possibly can. Because Windows Defender isn't the only program Malwarebytes has caused problems with. It damaged Zone Alarm as well. What next, will you wait until it attacks Bitdefender? Or how about your actual operating system? No, instead I'd suggest you dump that piece of malware pronto. B)

But on to problem solving suggestions. Well, this is a tricky situation since Windows Defender is part of the operating system.

First of all, Windows Defender should be disabled. To do this manually, go to your Control Panel>System and Security>Administrative Tools. When a window pops up, click on the Services shortcut. Then scroll down to Windows Defender. STOP the service, then change the Startup type to manual. See if this fixes your problem.

If that doesn't work, then try to run the System File Checker. If you have the Windows 8 installation disc with you, I'd suggest popping that in your CD tray and running the offline System File Checker from the BIOS. Otherwise, the online version should suffice. Simply right click your Command Prompt, and Run as Administrator. Then type exactly what I write in bold: sfc /scannow and hit enter. After the scan is complete, see if this fixes your problem.

If that doesn't work, I'd suggest you live with this problem. BUT, there is one more thing you can try, but I'd only use this as a last resort (considering your problem isn't that bad to begin with). You can try to rebuild the Windows Management Instrumentation Repository. Instructions on how to do that can be found here:

Well, let me know if this worked. And please, dump Malwarebytes. That 'thing' is a piece of garbage.

I'm not going to quote that near sighted work of trash you call a reply. I will say however that any malwarebytes software that you download ACTUALLY FROM mbam will not contain any such nonsense you speak of

C-NET is home for garbage out dated and faulty version of programs. Look it up. Go compare the md5 's of the two downloads.

    I'll wait if you want.

MBAM has saved my ###### on more the a hand full of occasions. And furthermore has never has never screwed up my system with any mal-ware or any such apps that you mention.

I digress, They kinda dropped the ball on windows 8.1 integration. It screwed my windows defender so hard I had to re-flash. I mean, I could have kept a system that has holes sure...but I'm not in the business of giving away money.

Consider this case closed. MBAM at fault, but windows 8.1 the cause.

I tend to agree with the above points. Many here use MBAM without any problems (some are even using the Pro version, which isn't officially sanctioned by BD) Downloading from the MBAM official site is the best advice.

So do I. I also agree with the advice to disable Windows Defender. It is a waste of resources since it doesn't provide anything BDTS can't alone. With MBAM as well there is even less need to have WD on.

So yes it was a rather lengthy missive but the advice apart from ditching MBAM was sound.

I ran MBAM Pro and BDTS for a long time together and never had any problems although now I only run the MBAM Scheduler to scan every day - no reason other that I didn't feel it was necessary to run the MBAM live scan.

On my win 8.1 set up with BDTS the Windows Defender is turned off and as yet not seen any problems with it set like that. I have yet to install MBAM Pro on it but if I do it will be non-resident but again with the scheduler running.

MBAM is a great program and has in the past picked up stuff that was missed by the AV. :)

  • Just to clarify, When I reflashed my windows system BD correctly disabled WD. It was something with Mbam Pro's disabling of it.

I did try the SFC scan before I got that reply, but it didn't fix it.

Hey, not all of my post was complete garbage. ;) Anyways, did you also try to rebuild the WMI Repository? If you were going to reformat anyways, then it probably couldn't have hurt to try that and see if it worked. :)
