I have 2 desktops and 2 laptops so I bought two 3 PC Total Security 2015 keys. i was hoping to use the two unused keys on my two smartphones, but I guess this cannot be done. Is this correct?

That's true, Bitdefender Total Security 2015 keys cover Windows systems only.
For Android devices you can either use a Bitdefender Mobile Security standalone key or a pack key which can be used to protect Windows, Android and Mac:
