Cannot add Exclusions

So I am an IT student who needs to be able to program, but Butdefender keeps blocking the programs I write. This is super frustrating.
I follow the guides on the internet, I go to the functions, I go to the antivirus module, I click the cogwheel, I click Exlusions and it shows me that 0 things are exluded from scanning. Now how do I add exclusions? I click on the bars, the title in the bars, on the little arrow on the right pointing down, I click everything, but Bitdefender doesn't respond. I still have no exclusions and it's driving me crazy!
