Earlier this month for my Thinkpad T480 laptop, Lenovo released a docking station firmware update. When I ran it (THANKFULLY it was check firmware version first not update), Bitdefender kicked in, and "disinfected" it. However, the tool already set the docking station partially. In a panic I removed Bitdefender completely and rebooted my machine.
On subsequent attempts, the firmware update tool reported no docking station was connected, so I feared the worst. It's not every day that security software ruins a $250 laptop accessory. I spent hours on this, searching, and eventually in a last ditch effort, I unplugged the docking station completely, including power. Thankfully the docking station reverted itself in what must have been a firmware mode that was triggered by it, but it was interrupted by the Bitdefender software. I was able to run the tool without the Bitdefender installed, and update the firmware. However even now, if I run the tool with Bitdefender installed, it still panics "disinfects it", and the docking station is set in update mode and the update tool cannot find it, until I pull out the power adapter plug to reset it.
I have already contacted Bitdefender on this matter so they can prevent this from occurring in the future. However, this particular laptop is quite interesting, and there have been reports from users who have ruined their laptop completely after a Thunderbolt firmware update failed on them. At this point, I am considering uninstalling it completely whenever a firmware (either BIOS, Thunderbolt, docking station, you name there's a lot) is released from Lenovo.
