Bitdefender said 'not protecting'?

This morning, I noticed that bitdefender said it wasn't protecting and that my subscription had 'expired'. I still have another 6 months left before anything expires.
on bitdefender app, I clicked on the link at the bottom that said 'register/activate/already have code' and it immediately went back to normal 'protecting'?
Was this related to an update? Did the protection get turned off?
Or from a security perspective, did someone/something turn off and/or bypass the protection?
