HTTP Error code 429 - how do I deal with this?

I keep getting an HTTP error code 429 message when I try to visit my etsy shop. The only way that I can stop it is to shut down and to reboot my computer.

Etsy say that it is a VPN error and that I should switch it off when I visit their site. Not an ideal answer, as I can't be the only etsy user on the planet with VPN!

I did add my estsy shop URL to safe user list and everything was OK for a while. The link was via an url error message. That link isn't in the 429 error message.

I now want to switch VPN off for all sites. It is too problematic. How do I do this?

I will also be uninstalling my bitdefender app. It's only as good as it's weakest point which is useless in this instance.

Some websites have implemented a system to detect VPNs and do not load or display errors if the Internet connection is filtered through a VPN.

To determine whether the problem lies within the VPN, temporarily disconnect from Bitdefender VPN and then try to visit again the site. To disconnect Bitdefender VPN, simply press the power button on the VPN interface. If the site still doesn’t load after interrupting the VPN, the issue lies somewhere else. If the site loads properly in this situation, you know it’s the VPN that is causing the issue. 

Certain websites practice geo-blocking as a way of limiting access to their content based on geographical location. Geo-blocking is done by identifying an IP address. What does that mean? For instance, if you live in the USA and you connect Bitdefender VPN to the Sweden server, an IP corresponding to that country will be assigned to your device. Now, all websites will think that you access the Internet from Sweden. But if you go to a site whose content isn’t available in Sweden, you won’t be able to access that specific site.

Therefore, as a first troubleshooting method, if you can’t view a website with the VPN on, connect to a few different VPN servers from the list of available locations.

Start with the country you are currently in. Bitdefender Premium VPN provides servers in over 45 regions across the globe. If there is no VPN server for your country or the VPN location is already set to your country, then choose the nearest region.

You can also use Split Tunneling to whitelist the site.

Split Tunneling allows you to route any website outside the VPN connection, to access the Internet directly. This feature is currently only available for Windows, Android, and iOS.

To exclude a site from using the Bitdefender VPN connection on Windows:

1. Open the Bitdefender VPN app on your computer.
2. Access Settings (represented by a cogwheel ⚙︎) on the navigation menu of the VPN interface.
3. Go to the General tab, then toggle Split tunneling to the on position.
4. In the Split tunneling panel, click on Manage.
5. 5. Next, click the Add button.
6. 6. Type the URL of the website you can’t access, then press the + sign in order to add the website to the whitelist.

You should be able to access the website afterwards. To remove a site from Split Tunneling, simply click the trash can icon next to it.
