My father (89yo) is on a shared network. How do I ensure that Bitdefender's VPN will activate when he opens his computer and stays active while in use.?

Have you ever used BD VPN? Are you a current user? If not, I would highly suggest you run the 7-day trial version on your PC to see if it's something that is stable (i.e. not a lot of error messages, consistently connects and stays connected) and user-friendly for your dad to use, that wouldn't confuse him, just in case.

To add here, if you do opt for Bitdefender VPN as your encryption tunnel of choice, you can set the Autoconnect feature to connect the VPN at Windows startup, using the app's settings:
But like Scott said, it's best to get familiarized with the VPN and its features, before setting it to connect by default.
