[resolved] Full Scan Kill My Cpu

Hello.

Today i have tried to make a full scan...this was a BIG MISTAKE.

My computer really "killed". My system specification : Windows 7 Professional X86 SP1, Dual-Core 2,67GHZ, 2 GB RAM.

I have not managed to stop scanning process in any way...interface of scanning blocked, i could not stop scanning process form task manager, the only way to stop was to shutdown windows.

I like this new product, but i think we need an optimization for CPU usage.

I will attach a print-screen to see details.

Have a good day !

You're not alone on that front either. I hit 100% for about 1-2 minutes and held my breath through it. It finally backed down, but that was my thought too, I'm not going to run a full scan for awhile.

My specs on this notebook are:

    Windows 7 Home Premium SP1

    Core i5 520m 2.40 GHz

    4 GB DDR3 Ram

  • Just thought I would try to dig into it more. I ran another System Scan from my C: drive partition, and when it got to my K: drive partition, that's when it began spiking out. The first top two images show how the CPU had been maxed out for a bit. I don't know if BD has a hard time with Dropbox (in my case), as a Contextual Scan for that on my C: side, of that folder again, got the 50-100% cpu readings

I tried stopping, exiting Dropbox to see if BD was having a hard time with it running the cloud back up, but that didn't help. It is repeatable with Dropbox, on my Notebook, to get the high cpu. It especially doesn't like my Security Software folder of misc free and previous paid for security solutions, and also doesn't like my HP driver folder.

I didn't finish the scan, so I don't know if it would be cached, and no longer re-scan them and thus alleviate that issue?

  • Hi Christian :)

Done and sent, if you need anything else, let me know :)

  • Hi Chris!

    I sent the log file.

  • Disable the Hyper Threading option from BIOS, if enable or vice versa, then check the resource usage again.

I don't have Hyper Threading in bios, my processor is not Pentium 4 with Hyper Threading, is Intel Pentium D805 Dual-Core.

  • @ONT:

What is your CPU consuming on a full scan ? And what is your CPU specification ?

Maybe mine is too low on performance...is the first DUAL-CORE appeared running at 2,67 Mhz...

But reading the recommended specification for BDIS 2013, i see this :

"CPU: Intel CORE Duo (1.66 GHz) or equivalent processor

Memory (RAM): 1 GB (Microsoft Windows XP)

1.5 GB (Microsoft Windows Vista, Microsoft Windows 7 and Microsoft Windows 8)"

I have 2 GB of RAM and my system is Windows 7 Professional SP1.

I meet the recommended specification i guess...

  • Some news ?

  • Me too.

I'm use Core i5 760 and run 100% about 5-6 minutes when "System Scan".

I use Windows 8 RP and Bitdefender Internet Security 2013 x64.

    Hello :)

I have escalated the current situation to our developers.

Have you tried to turn off Active Virus Control before the scan?

Also, since Auto Scan is turned on, there is no need to manually scan the PC, the On Access scanner will take care of all the issues.

If you still want to manually scan the PC, you can do it once per month.

    Take care.

    Hi Christian :)

I did run a System scan with Active Virus Contol off, and the scan setting at default. I did not have the prolonged 100% spikes as before, only about 1/2 doz. 98-99% spikes. It would be nice if it only spiked to 60-65%. Did disabling th AV control help, and did it also help that in my case the folders that were giving the scanning engine fits (HP back up driver folder, and misc previous free, old, antivirus solution folder) that these are now cached and no longer being scanned, thus also helped?

To have a scan button, and not to be able to really use it is a little hard to ask. We've been programed over the years of PC security maintence, and now to be told to back off on scanning... but, but, it's a button ...just have to use it, I want to see files being manually scanned in the scan window ^_^

I know the Bitdefender technology is fantastic, and a once a month System Scan is enough, but it still feels good to be in somewhat control, and to be able to run a System scan without worries of toasting our "intel inside", would be nice.

edit: Thanks for escalating this issue :)

  • After I turn off AVC, I can't turn on again <img class=" /> . When I turn on, then close main interface, AVC auto off :(. Is it a new bugs?

  • I don't have problem with CPU but have with HDD :(

    post-106270-1343794894_thumb.png

  • I have turned off AVC, and i get almost the same result...CPU utilization fluctuates between 90-98 %.

    Hello :)

A product update was released. Your build should be 16.18.0.1406(please right click on Bitdefender icon from system tray-near the clock-and choose "About". You should see in the left side the build number).

In order for the product update to be installed, you need to reboot your machine(you should see in the Events -> "Reboot required" under the Update module).

    Changelog:

Let me know if the situation is solved.

    Have a nice day.

  • Hi,

    This issue still remain.

  • Hello Cristi.

I can confirm that this issue still remaining after updated to the latest build, unfortunately. <_<

After 5 minutes of full scanning, CPU usage is 100 % and remain at that level.

    OS: Windows 7 Ultimate SP1,32bits

I did the Full System Scan for C Drive only and excluded all other partitions and also My Documents folder, and it takes about 2 hours to complete the scan.

It may be possible that the Scan is not taking the full advantage of physical multi core processors.

    Hello :)

Out product uses all the cores available from the real or virtual processors.

    This screenshot proves this statement:

    Hi :)

A possible cause was discovered and the fix should be provided by a new version of the scanning process.

Until this is resolved, I recommend you to keep Auto Scan turned on and it will take care of everything.

    Have a great week!

  • Good news, Cristi.

    Thanks support team Bitdefender!
