Hey there, Just got bitdefender total security 2016... noticed that the background process uses between 230, and 450 mb of memory. Just wondering if this is normal, or if there is a memory leak issue going on.
This is normal, at least for me.

It varies from machine to machine, there is no fix amount. If your machine has a lot of RAM its actually good for performance that applications assign more than usual. As free RAM is useless, you want to have it in use. Windows knows when to cut the RAM pipe and assign more to other newly opened applications (Windows 7 and upwards, Vista and XP have terrible RAM management)
You shouldn't worry you are well within the normal curve,
