Even though your exact error number isn't listed here, if you scroll down to the bottom, "Other error codes" it has some suggestions that may help, to wait a bit and try again later, try a restart or run a repair. You can also try a manual update (if you haven't yet) by right-clicking the BD System tray icon and update from there.

Try the following: right click on the Bitdefender icon in the system tray and select Update Now. Wait until the process is completed. If the update is successful this time, It may have been a temporary connectivity issue that is now solved. Bitdefender updates as soon as it manages to successfully download the update files. If the update continues to fail, check the internet connection.
I also recommend to restart the PC then check if the update succeeds and to connect the PC to another network.
If the updates are successful on other networks, the issue is with the default network configuration. Try changing the DNS and disabling 3rd party firewall programs.
If the update error persists on other networks as well, uninstall and reinstall Bitdefender.
If Bitdefender still fails to perform updates, kindly contact the Support Teams and provide the error received. The engineers will require logs from the machine as well.

1017 Update Error : I get this error every time I have Bitdefender VPN on. And only then. When VPN is turned off, Total security works normally. Is it necessary to set something in VPN or Total security or is there an error in the interaction of the programs? With my VPN on, it refuses to even access this site. What can we do? Please reply. Thank you

Kindly check if the following steps help:
(A) Set Bitdefender VPN as an exclusion in Bitdefender Total Security.
1) Temporarily disable Bitdefender Protection:
2) Set exclusions in Bitdefender Antivirus:
3) Set exclusions in Bitdefender Advanced Threat Defense:
4) Re-enable real-time protection in Bitdefender
(B) Add Bitdefender Total Security in split tunneling within Bitdefender VPN. Check how to do this by following the steps in the link provided below.
If the issue persists, uninstall and reinstall both Bitdefender products.
If, even after uninstalling and reinstalling, the issue persists, kindly contact Bitdefender support by visiting

Hello @Mikec,
1017 is a "forbidden" error, in the sense that there are some countries where Bitdefender does not allow updates. Maybe your VPN was set to one of those countries, so more details are needed. To what server are you connecting when using the VPN?
