Vsserv.exe High Cpu Usage

  • I have been watching this topic for a very long time now. Is this problem going to be addressed other than the typical "submit a support ticket" response? My computer has been unusable because of BitDefender. This update program uses 150MB+ of memory while it is running. Why in the world does it need that much memory in order to run? I think as customers we deserve some answers. Is this a problem that is caused by things specific to the user or is it a problem that is a general problem? I would not even mind if one of the support people said they have no idea what is causing this. Their response seems to look like they have some fix that they are keeping under the table or something every time they direct people to fill out tickets or talk in private messages.

    As a temporary solution (not sure if this will work), but I turned off automatic updates. It seems to be fixing the problem, but I do not know if that will last.

  • OK. I have experienced the same issue for a while. I used BD previous version and experienced NO problem. But just like many other users posted here, I found this "VSSERV.EXE high CPU usage" issue after using BD2010.

    It seems to me not much help we can get from BD staff. So I did some "debug" myself. Here is what I found:

    1) I opened Firefox and opened a lot of tabs(windows), everything seems OK;

    2) opened several application programs like MS WORD, EXCEL, still OK;

    3) opened a game called gm5.exe -(it's a board game(Go) not a virus. I played it for years with previous BD version, no problem.) now, the problem showed. and quickly, the CPU is fully occupied.

    4) I killed the game, the problem persisted!

    5) I killed Firefox, the problem stopped!!(the MS WORD still running!)

    6) I reloaded the game, NO PROBLEM! I played for an hour no issue at all!

    7) I loaded iexplorer,(game still running) NO problem.

    8) I killed the game and reload the Firefox, NO problem.

    So it seems to me, Firefox cannot work with the game. If they both launched, somehow it will trigger VSSERV.EXE running fast and until you kill both, VSSERV won't stop. I don't know why!? But this my experience. Hopefully, it will help!

    If someone can give deeper explanation, I will appreciate it.

  • I contacted BD support & they provided me with a download link for BD total security 2010.

    At the moment the problem with vsserv seems to be gone, but last time it took 4 days after

    reinstalling BDTS 2009 to start acting up so I will keep my fingers crossed ;)

    In each case I can play runescape again without any problems so at the moment I’m happy.

    If the problem should resurface I will make a new post on this forum.

    But if any of you still have the vsserv problem, I recommend logging on the BD website & use the

    costumer support link; explain your problem and ask for the free update.

    They will provide you with an uninstaller and a download link for BD 2010.

  • This is what I found out about vvserv.exe: vvserv.exe protects your computer against Internet-bound threats & gets

    unstable because of damage to your computer registry.

    ==>

    My BD updated while i was playing an online java game without using game modus & asked for a restart to complete the update,

    i guess that because the high memory & CPU usage BD made a bad registry entry.

    Using a little brainpower & logic I came to this conclusion:

    1) If you have vvserv.exe troubles reinstall bitdefender & make sure that ALL old BD register entries are deleted

    before you reinstall. (do it manually or use a reliable registry cleaner) !!! BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO MESS IT UP !!!

    2) After reinstalling BD change your automatic update settings to: “prompt before installing updates” or update manually

    to avoid that BD updates while you’re running other programs.

    3) If possible update to BitDefender 2010 which seems to be more stable & has a better user interface + updated features.

  • Hello Toothpick and AHJ,

    We are sorry to hear that you had a negative experience with our product. Unfortunatelly we are unable to provide you with a general solution on this issue. From what we have experienced so far this situation appears when there is a conflict between BitDefender and another program/application/process or any remains from other security solution.

    However, if you already tried to uninstall any other security solutions please be so kind as to take a few minutes to follow the steps from this post message and send us the necessary diagnostic reports.

    We also recommend you to upgrade free of charge to our latest version and let us know if the same situation persists.

    Please access the link bellow for complete information on how to upgrade to the 2010 version:

  • I am having the same problem as everyone else, namely my computer runs very slow and the Task Manager shows vsserv.exe is hogging all the processor time.

    I tried following your instructions, but when I attempt to uninstall Bitdefender 2009 I get the error message 'Network Error while attempting to read C:\WINDOWS\Installer\bdav.msi'

    I am getting totally fed up with Bitdefender. Maybe it protects my PC but the side effects are unacceptable. It seems it has intruded on all other use of the computer, yet I can't delete it!

    PLEASE HELP

  • Add me to the list of those experiencing high CPU usage from vsserv.exe. Any help would be appreciated.

    Just installed BitDefender Internet Security 13.0.19.347 (18 Mar 2010) on XP desktop platform.

    vsserv.exe process now hogs cpu at 40-80%. No solution as far as I can see.

    I've used AVG and AVIRA without any problems on various PCs (mine and friends whom I support) without this hassle.

    BTW, I find Norton also slows down PCs more than many security suites. Now BitDefender is not on my list of recommendations either.

  • I am having a problem with vsserve.exe hogging the CPU for 10 and 20 minutes at a time. This can occur when I am on line or disconnected from the internet. In one case the vsserv.exe paralleled doing a scan, other times not. Searching the internet suggests this is a problem of long standing. What can I do? :huh:

  • Hi,

    Please try the following and tell us if it makes a difference:

    Disable Automatic Updates, Reboot into safe mode, rename the file httproxy.dll from BitDefender's install folder (usually c:\program files\bitdefender\bitdefender 2009) and reboot again.

    If the problem still occurs, rename the file back.

    i tried this solution but my computer won't let me rename httproxy.dll - it says that it is in use and/or not writeable.. how do i make it NOT in use.. and is this a permanent solution??

  • I am enountering the same problem of high cpu usage by vsserv.exe. Plz send me the required steps to fix it. Also some times i am unable to enable my firewall due to an error. Could plz send me a solution to dis problem too.

    BD is a weird company. They can not solve a problem so many users have with their SW for many months. Finally I have fixed the problem by removing BD and purchasing /installing another AV software. Now at least every week they send me a renewal notice. I have asked then to remove me from their database for at least 10 times but they continue bothering me with renewal notices. What a customer unfriendly behavior..... Neither their SW works, nor their customer service......

    To ANYONE considering BitDefender products... Save yourself a zillion hours of grief and frustration and DO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT. I am not, by any stretch, a newby to internet security and I will NEVER do business with these fools again. I cannot begin to tell you about the ineptitude of their so called customer service department, the countless viruses and malware their software allowed onto my three computers, and the endless hours spent trying to resolve this blasted "vsserv.exe" headache. There are way too many other security suites out there to put up with this nonsense. My license expires in two days and I am already doing a happy dance that I finally get to be rid of this POS software once and for all.

  • :( I am having the same issue on my computer and it is now crawling at a snails pace.

  • I'm using BD 2009 and have the vsserv.exe problem as described. Mine shows up after viewing online video of any kind. Eventually it will settle down but it makes my PC unusable for ten minutes after viewing a video unless I reboot. Please contact me with any fixes ASAP.

    Hello all,

    In order to solve the encountered issue we recommend you to upgrade for free to BitDefender 2010. Please take a look over the system requirements for it and let us know if you agree to use it.

    Minimum Requirements:

    Available free hard disk space: 450 MB

    CPU: 800Mhz

    RAM:

    512 MB (Windows XP)

    1GB (Windows Vista / Windows 7)

    OS: Windows XP SP2, Vista, Windows 7

    Internet Explorer version: IE6

    Recommended requirements:

    Available free hard disk space: 600 MB free space

    Intel CORE2 (1.66 GHz) or equivalent processor

    2 GB of RAM

    Windows XP SP2, Vista, Windows 7

    Internet Explorer version: IE7

    Before installing the 2010 version we recommend you to uninstall any other security solution present on your PC. Usually when you use more than one security solutions on the same computer, the system may become unstable. This happens because all security solutions try to scan a file whenever one is accessed but they cannot do it at the same time, so this causes either slowdowns or crashes.

    Thank you.

  • I use bitdefender on my XP and it has worked great for the first month, but now I have a problem with the vsserv.exe process- it's using over than 50% from my cpu. I cant listen to Songs and play games as well...

    What can I do? It doesnt stop, and my computer works slowly.

    Hello hari_iitm,

    If BitDefender 2010 is compatible with your system we recommend you to install it, if not, please let us know and we will start the investigation of the issue.

    In order to install BitDefender Antivirus 2010 please follow the steps below:

    1. Please use our uninstall tool in order to uninstall/delete any previous BitDefender related files:

    http://www.bitdefender.com/uninstall

    Access the link and when the window with the BitDefender file appears, please choose the "Save to disk" option. Save the tool on the PC, run it, restart the computer.

    2. Install BitDefender using the latest installation kit available for download. Please note that you need to download (save) the installation kit prior to running it.

    The BitDefender Antivirus 2010 installation kit can be downloaded from one of the 2 locations:

  • Hi,

    I also have the CPU problem with my computer, using Bitdefender Total Security 2010 x64.

    Laptop with CPU Dual Core 3.06Ghz

    Memory 6gb 1333Mhz

    Hard Drive 500gb 7200

    Windows 7 x64

    My cpu got stuck many times at 100% with my previous installation of windows 7, so I decided to reboot my comptuer. I erased everything and started a new installation form scratch.

    I installed all my programs before Bitdefender Total Security 2010, and didn't have any CPU problems.

    After one day, I decided to install it again, and the problem came back. It's not permanent, it happens only when I use the internet. It sometimes spikes to 100% for 7-8minutes and my computer is blocked, my mouse works slowly during this period so I can't use it.

    I tried to use the Game mode, it doesn't change anything (or at least I didn't notice any improvement).

    I just turned off the automatic update and some parts of the program (IM protection, safe, identity control check etc.). I'll see if it changes anything. The Antispam for Outlook 2007 doesn't work properly either, it crashes a lot of times and because of it, Outlook recommends to uninstall the antispam....

    If this problem doesn't get solved I'll stop using and recommending Bitdefender. I already had the problem with the fake virus and I lost about 90% of my files in the process.

    its ok, i installed a different type. i got d 2010 version now but the vsserv.exe still lags my pc...

  • Hello Hopelight,

    The Free upgrade from one BitDefender version to another means that you can use your existing license key to register the 2010 version or the same product. For example, if you purchased BitDefender Antivirus 2009 then you will be able to register only the BitDefender Antivirus 2010 software, for Internet Security and Total security a message will pop-up letting you know that you do not have the correct version installed.

    Furthermore, in regards of the slowdown issue, in order to troubleshoot the issue you are encountering, we would like you to follow the steps below:

    1. Click on Start and select Run (for Vista you have the search box);

    2. Type 'cmd' and hit Enter;

    3. Type

    cd %programfiles%/bitdefender/bitdefender 2010

    and hit Enter;

    4. Type

    supporttool.exe /vsservtrace on

    and hit Enter;

    5. A pop-up should appear asking you to reboot the PC. Reboot the PC. If you are not asked to restart the PC, please do so on your own;

    6. Open BitDefender and reproduce the issue a couple of times;

    7. Click on Start and then choose My Computer/Computer;

    8. Browse to

    C:\Program Files\BitDefender\BitDefender 2010

    - considering that BitDefender was installed on the default C partition;

    9. Double left click on the supporttool.exe file - if you are using Vista or Windows 7, right click on the supporttool application file and select Run as Administrator;

    10. Click on Next, wait a few minutes for the progress bar to complete and then click on Finish;

    11. Please also go to the desktop and send us the file that was created by the SupportTool. You can either upload it here and send me a PM (Private Message) with the download link or submit the supporttool file to us then send me a PM with the ticket ID you received from us.

    We will analyze the information you sent and then reply with a possible solution.

    We are looking forward to hearing from you!

    This has obviously been an ongoing problem, but I have recently been experiencing the "vsserv.exe" CPU hogging problem with it taking 98% of my CPU usage at least once a day for a couple of minutes at a time. I am guessing that by now there is a working resolution from Bit Defender that works. If someone could enlighten me with the solution, it would be appreciated!

    Yes, i think this is the correct solution.

    I buy 20 licenses of bitdefender 2008 for 3 years and this behavior always occurs. Many times, just doing a copy of a large file to a external disk, its enough!

    I currently use 2010 version, but its the same s..t!

    Just a few (well not so few) minutes ago i open my email and launch the browser... bitdefender stops service, hard disk start spinning like a fool and i cant do nothing.

    Finnaly i can start task manager and i see the vsserv.exe eating all my resources!

    Bitdefender licenses expire in January 2011... finnaly! :P

    Im starting look out for another solution. Bitdefender loses +30 licenses.

    Hi,

    I have similar problem with vsser.exe. It uses between 60-100% of my CPU according to my task manager. It stops everything else on track. Not just when it scans, but anytime I use my computer. I switched to BitDefender because I read it will not slow my computer down as McAfee which I had last year.

    Please help, it is really, really annoying.

    I have Bitdefender Total Security 2010.

    Thank you.

    :( I'm Bummed Out,

    I finally saw these forums here tonight for the first time. Like all the others here I've been experiencing HIGH cpu usage from the BitDefender "vsserv.exe" for a while now...At least two weeks...maybe longer as I've been away a lot this summer. It lags me out at 95% in the Windows Task Manager box like everyone else complaining about it..for at least 1-2 minutes and all computer use ends until scan is over. What I have only found from one or two other responders in here is a reference to the BD System Tray Icon going grey on them which is a sign of the security suite TURNING ITSELF OFF. I submitted a trouble ticket to the BD staff about that when it occurred for the first time within a week of my first installing BD-2009 and their response was similar to what they have told others here about how to fix the "vsserv.exe" problems - to uninstall ALL other security measures you have on your particular system as they impede the way BD is SUPPOSED to work.....I find that to be a wrong fix. While it may enable BD to properly work...we all know that for a computer to be completely protected, one MUST have multiple sources of available scanning tools to adequately find and remove all the bugs that have come down the pike at us in the last couple of years. For BitDefender to think (and suggest) that their tool is a one fix for all your computer woes is ludicrous. In addition...not one of the other security suites I've used EVER turned itself off, and none of them ever lagged me the way "vsserv.exe" does. People other than myself have been experiencing these issues for a lot longer than I have, and for some strange reason the Techies at Bd (who have infinately MORE resources than us average Joes & Josephines) have been unable to resolve said issue....this is a very sad state of affairs for this company. I for one am very close to resolving this with the one fix detailed here that seems to be the only one that works....uninstalling and finding another Suite.

    PS: One more thing...when BD was first installed it allowed me to get into and and play on Battlefield II servers...then inexplicably, I started getting kicked from BF2 servers...I tried to allow the game in the "exclusions" section in the antivirus which didn't work....the "Game Mode" didn't allow me to connect and stay....the only work-around was to completely disable BD Security Suite and rely on Windows Firewall. Initially I thought the problem was with the game..not BD....It turned out to be BitDefender all along. This whole deal with BD has been an EPIC FAIL. Not exactly a glowing recomendation for this product I'm afraid.

    -Bummed Out

  • Hi everybody - I have the same issue with BD 2010. I am disappointed that after so much time that BD has not issued a universal patch that is simple to apply. If there is no resolution coming in the short term I will be going elsewhere for protection and voicing my displeasure widely. : <img class=" />

  • I sent the debug files in, and submitted a PM as requested. I look forward to a speedy reply and solution.

    Thank you.

  • This discussion has been going for more than a year and all that BD has done was collecting files and wasting more of everybody's precious time . The rest of my time is taken up by vsserv.exe .

    Please just answer this question truthfully and without babbling anymore :

    Can you fix it right now or are you just stalling while taking our money each year ?

    I am going to another protection now . First when released last year BD2010 was extremely buggy , the latest version is slow on older machines and now 2009 is also getting worse !!

    PLEASE HELP US ALL !!!!!

  • I'm going to throw something in to the mix here ...

    I was having exactly the same problems. I always found that the huge slowdown occurred when I first switch on my PC and access the Internet at which point I was finding attempts to do anything was virtually impossible.

    Bringing up Task Manager showed that vsserv.exe was indeed hogging CPU Usage. I tried stopping various other processes to see if that had any affect.

    I wonder if there is a conflict between wuauclt.exe and vsserv.exe?

    My own personal experience has shown that disabling Windows Update has put an end to my particular slowdown issues. I disabled windows automatic update, because when I look now at some of the stuff it wants to put on my PC, it seems pointless having it running. I run it every once in a while (When I want to run and allowing me to select what windows crap is put on my pc as opposed to it loading it on automatically) as opposed to when it feels like doing, (which was invariably when I wanted to use my PC and connect to the internet.

    That's my solution to vsserv.exe and it is working for me - (I disabled wuauclt.exe about a month ago now, during which time I've had no recurrence of vsserv.exe issues)

  • Me again ,

    Uninstalled BD with removal tool which is the only way .

    Downloaded COMODO Internet Security FREE !!

    It is really a nice AV and all the reviews are good !

    Goodbye BD - no tears from my side

  • I have the same problem and have read some of the topics and replies and as it shows nothing has worked yet. could you please help me to see if i can fix this or not. frankly i was thinking about renewing BD in 2011 but i dont think i will do it if this problem exists.

    Thank you
