Bitdefender for Android and Google Phone Transfer

This isn't a problem, it's more of a community service comment.

So I got a new phone for Christmas (yay!) and used Google's system for transferring settings and apps from one Pixel to another.

Since Bitdefender was on the old phone, it auto-installed Bitdefender on the new phone. That was actually kind of impressive.

The gotcha is that the Pixel transfer system has no way of knowing what your Bitdefender account is or the access code. If it did, that would be an enormous flaw. Everything to this point is correct, but your new phone doesn't have a subscribed Bitdefender account.

So Bitdefender when it starts on the new phone auto-creates a trial subscription. This is different to if you buy a new phone and then install and activate Bitdefender from Central within your subscription.

Logging in to your Bitdefender account on the new phone DOES NOT get rid of the trial subscription. You have to manually remove your old phone from the devices list in your subscription, and add the new.

In my case at least this left me with two device records for the same phone: the one created with the trial subscription and another created when the same phone was added to my subscription. You then need to remove the device record auto-created for the trial. Now you're done.

  • Let me break it down to confirm and elaborate:

    1. Auto-Installation of Bitdefender on the New Phone
Google's transfer system effectively clones the apps and settings from your old device to the new one. Bitdefender, being part of your app ecosystem, is seamlessly installed on the new phone. This part is impressive and works as expected.
    2. Trial Subscription Creation
Since the Pixel transfer system doesn't transfer account-specific data (like login credentials or Bitdefender access codes), the newly installed Bitdefender app on your new device cannot automatically associate itself with your existing Bitdefender subscription. As a result, the app creates a trial subscription on the new phone. This behavior is by design to avoid potential security risks and unauthorized account access.
    3. Login Doesn’t Remove Trial Subscription
Logging into your Bitdefender Central account on the new phone doesn't automatically resolve the mismatch between the trial subscription and your active subscription. This requires manual intervention to align the device with your subscription.
    4. Manual Removal of Old Device and Trial Record
To properly sync the new phone with your subscription:
      • You need to manually remove the old phone from the devices list in your Bitdefender Central account.
      • Add the new phone under your active subscription. This step ensures the device is properly licensed and associated with your subscription.
