I asked that question earlier this year. I was told that "Auto-connect" does not work after sleep/hibernate mode… or more accurately, it was never designed to do that :(
Hello,
I think first it must be established if the Auto-connect settings are properly enabled, because there are two setups:
2. Connect at Startup:
If the latter is enabled, however the VPN does not connect automatically at Windows startup, then this could be a bug and Support intervention is required in this scenario. But how did you came to the conclusion that Auto-connect" was not designed to work after sleep/hibernate mode?
Regards,
Alex
Hi Alex. Earlier this year I thought this was a bug and I opened a ticket… I received the following response
"Unfortunately, waking the PC from sleep mode is not considered a device startup by the system, and therefore, the VPN does not auto-connect in this scenario based on the current settings. While the VPN is designed to disconnect when the PC goes into sleep mode to preserve system resources and ensure security, it currently does not have a specific setting to auto-connect upon waking the device from sleep. This means that after your PC wakes up, a manual connection to the VPN is required to ensure your online activities remain secure."
Oh, I see.. Well, thanks for sharing this, I was unaware that it works like that.
I also have this annoying problem.
I usually put my workstation into Hibernate mode in order to reduce boot time and to be able to continue from where I left off but BD VPN does not auto restart which is very frustrating. On a weekly basis I perform a full shutdown; BD VPN starts on re-boot.
Looks like BD VPN needs updating to add a "Connect VPN at wake-up from Hibernate/Sleep".
I understand let the VPN only automatically connects on Windows start up, not when coming out of hibernation or sleep.
My problem is that after hibernation or sleep I have to shut down the computer and restart to get the VPN to connect. Manual reconnection does not work after hibernation or sleep for my HP laptop.
Any suggestions?
Hi @gsoClarke,
This is a separate issue that was resolved in a recent VPN update:
I would advise uninstalling and reinstalling the VPN app, as this should get you the latest version, or simply wait until the update rollout is completed.
I find it odd that neither the website nor these responses from the Community provide a direct link to the 27.2.3.7 update for subscribers.
I'll muddle through. Thanks
There's no direct link because the updates are released gradually, in batches. But reinstalling from scratch should normally give you the latest kit available.
Since a VPN is used by a user to secure their internet connection, it seems that it should auto-reconnect from sleep or hibernate if the user had it running when sleeping or hibernating..
After all, we install a VPN to protect our connections to the internet, than it should be a logical conclusion, that it should re-connect when coming out of sleep/hibernate modes!
I see that this issue has been around since December 2024 and yet has not been addressed other than to say it wasn't designed to do so. See post by CanDor-ESM✭Dec 31, 2024.
It would seem to warrant some attention if BD VPN is supposed to be a high quality VPN.
Thank you for listening to my rant. I look forward to a reply.
Hi,
From a technical perspective, this has not been labeled as an issue, because the VPN is designed to disconnect when the PC goes into sleep mode to preserve system resources and ensure security. Now, there are a few arguments for this, including some potential security and privacy risks. Some systems may resume from sleep with partially initialized network stacks. This means that automatically reconnecting the VPN too soon could cause a connection failure, or may result in VPN app crashes, or even IP leaks during the reconnection attempts. One member pointed out that they were using a workstation, and in this scenario, if the PC resumes in a restricted environment (e.g. work network), auto-reconnecting VPN might bypass firewalls, break compliance policies or send data through foreign servers without user awareness.
Another thing to consider is that the user may not be aware the VPN has reconnected, and this can be a concern especially if the VPN endpoint is in a foreign jurisdiction, where a VPN is banned or even illegal. Also, in the event the standard VPN version is being used (which offers limited traffic) if the user is unaware that the VPN has reconnected automatically, this can consume the daily available traffic quota without his knowledge. There are other reasons as well, but generally speaking, I think these would be the main ones.
I hope these insights bring more clarity.
