Why does Bitdefender VPN stop working after return from Windows Sleep or Hibernate?

  • I asked that question earlier this year. I was told that "Auto-connect" does not work after sleep/hibernate mode… or more accurately, it was never designed to do that :(

  • Hello,

I think first it must be established if the Auto-connect settings are properly enabled, because there are two setups:

    1. Open on Startup:

    2. Connect at Startup:

If the latter is enabled, however the VPN does not connect automatically at Windows startup, then this could be a bug and Support intervention is required in this scenario.
But how did you came to the conclusion that Auto-connect" was not designed to work after sleep/hibernate mode?

  • Hi Alex. Earlier this year I thought this was a bug and I opened a ticket… I received the following response

"Unfortunately, waking the PC from sleep mode is not considered a device startup by the system, and therefore, the VPN does not auto-connect in this scenario based on the current settings. While the VPN is designed to disconnect when the PC goes into sleep mode to preserve system resources and ensure security, it currently does not have a specific setting to auto-connect upon waking the device from sleep. This means that after your PC wakes up, a manual connection to the VPN is required to ensure your online activities remain secure."

  • Oh, I see.. Well, thanks for sharing this, I was unaware that it works like that.

  • I also have this annoying problem.

I usually put my workstation into Hibernate mode in order to reduce boot time and to be able to continue from where I left off but BD VPN does not auto restart which is very frustrating.
On a weekly basis I perform a full shutdown; BD VPN starts on re-boot.

Looks like BD VPN needs updating to add a "Connect VPN at wake-up from Hibernate/Sleep".

  • I understand let the VPN only automatically connects on Windows start up, not when coming out of hibernation or sleep.

My problem is that after hibernation or sleep I have to shut down the computer and restart to get the VPN to connect. Manual reconnection does not work after hibernation or sleep for my HP laptop.

    Any suggestions?

  • Hi @gsoClarke,

This is a separate issue that was resolved in a recent VPN update:

I would advise uninstalling and reinstalling the VPN app, as this should get you the latest version, or simply wait until the update rollout is completed.

  • I find it odd that neither the website nor these responses from the Community provide a direct link to the 27.2.3.7 update for subscribers.

    I'll muddle through. Thanks

  • There's no direct link because the updates are released gradually, in batches. But reinstalling from scratch should normally give you the latest kit available.
