VPN

Starlink, PC, Mobile Phone, TV

Just using the "test" facility, I can see that my PC changes IP. But my phone doesn't. My phone stay on the same Starlink IP.

Is this normal? I would like to use the mobile phone and TV from a different location

  • I should rewrite the last line.

Yes, it's normal for your PC and phone to exhibit different IP address behaviors, especially with a Starlink connection. Here's a breakdown of why and how it relates to your desire to use your phone and TV from a different IP location:

    Understanding IP Address Changes

    • PC IP Changes:
      • PCs often change IP addresses due to DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol). Your router, or in Starlink's case, the Starlink network itself, assigns IP addresses dynamically. When your PC disconnects and reconnects, or after a certain lease period, it might get a new IP.
      • Also, if you are using a VPN on the PC, that will change the IP address.
    • Phone IP Stability:
      • Mobile devices, especially when connected to a cellular network, tend to maintain a more stable IP address. This is because mobile carriers often use network address translation (NAT) on a large scale, and the IP assigned to your phone might be tied to your session or location for a longer duration.
      • When a phone is on wifi, it will behave similar to the PC. When using Starlink wifi, it is subject to the Starlink network's DHCP.
      • When the phone is using cellular data, it uses the carriers IP addresses.

    Starlink's Role

    • Starlink uses CGNAT (Carrier-Grade Network Address Translation), which means many users share a pool of public IP addresses. This can contribute to IP address stability or changes, depending on how Starlink manages its network.
    • Starlink IP addresses are usually related to the general area of your starlink cell. They are not tied to your exact geographical location.

Using Mobile Phone Data and TV from a Different IP Location

    • Mobile Phone:
      • To use your mobile phone's data with an IP address from a different location, you'd typically need to use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) on your phone. A VPN creates an encrypted connection to a server in another location, and your internet traffic appears to originate from that server's IP address.
      • Keep in mind that some services may detect and block VPN usage.
    • TV:
      • For your TV, the method depends on how you're accessing content. If you're using a smart TV with streaming apps, you could potentially use a VPN on your router (if your router supports it) or a dedicated VPN device to route your TV's traffic through a different location.
      • Many Smart TVs do not support VPN applications.
      • If using a streaming device such as a Roku, or Firestick, then a VPN can be installed on some of those devices, or the router.
      • Streaming services actively try to prevent VPN usage.
    • Limitations:
      • Streaming services often use geolocation techniques to determine your actual location, even if you're using a VPN. They may block access if they detect inconsistencies.
      • Using a VPN can slow down your internet speed due to the added encryption and routing.

    In Summary

    • Your PC and phone's IP address behavior is normal.
    • To achieve your goal of using mobile data and TV from a different IP location, a VPN is the most common solution.
    • Be aware of the limitations and potential for detection by streaming services.
