USB Flash Drives Names disappeared

Hi, I recently purchased, installed and started using BitDefender. It asked me if I wanted to immunize my USB sticks and I agreed. But since then all the names I put to differentiate my USB flash drives are missing and when I try to put them back it doesn't stick. Is there anything I can do? I usually have many USB flash drives or external drives and I want them to have a name to know which is which. I don't understand why this happened.

Why Your USB Flash Drive Names Disappear

Bitdefender USB Immunization feature works by creating a special protected autorun.inf folder on the root of your USB flash drive.

The goal is to prevent malware from using Windows AutoRun to infect your system. Malware often tries to place its own autorun.inf file on USB flash drives to execute automatically when plugged in. Bitdefender blocks this by creating a protected, empty autorun.inf folder so nothing malicious can overwrite it.

The autorun.inf file is also the standard Windows mechanism used to store a USB flash drive’s custom label (the name you see in File Explorer). Because Bitdefender replaces this file with a protected folder, Windows can no longer create or update the file needed to store your custom label.

As a result:

• Your USB flash drive names disappear
• Any new name you try to assign doesn’t save
• Windows falls back to default names like “Removable Disk” or just the drive letter

In short, Bitdefender immunization prioritizes protection over the custom drive naming feature by occupying the filename needed for both.

How to Fix It

There are two ways to resolve this:

1. Disable Bitdefender USB Immunizer

• Open your Bitdefender product dashboard
• Go to Protection → Antivirus → Settings → Scan Flash Drives
• From the dropdown menu, select Disabled

2. Format Your USB Flash Drive

• Formatting will remove the immunization and allow you to rename the USB flash drive freely

After doing either of these, you should be able to assign and keep custom names for your USB flash drives.
