Problem with .NET Framework while installing VPN Premium

problem with .NET Framework version and Windows 8

Hello,

I added the VPN Premium utility to my basic BitDefender subscription.

At the end of the activation and installation of VPN Premium, I received the following message from BitDefender: “.NET Framework 4.7.2 or later is not present. Please install it to continue.”

I tried to install version 4.7.2, but the system reported that “.NET Framework 4.7.2 is not supported on this operating system.”

The operating system is Windows 8 Enterprise 2012 Build 9200.

In the system folder, I find c:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319.

However, using the PowerShell command get-ChildItem “HKLM:\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\NET Framework Setup\\NDP,” I find that version 3.5 is installed and version 4.0 is classified as “deprecated.”

The BitDefender VPN Premium manual on page 10 lists the following system requirements:

Operating systems: Windows 7 with Service Pack 1, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10.

Therefore, I should have no problems installing VPN Premium!?

I also tried the Microsoft .NET Framework Repair Tool suggested by BitDefender Support, but without success. During the repair attempt, a dialog box appeared suggesting that I should repair Microsoft .NET Framework 4.6. but, nevertheless the new folder v6 wasn’t in c:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\....

Would any of you kindly know how I can bypass this block?

The issue arises because Windows 8 is not compatible with newer versions of the .NET Framework.

According to Microsoft’s official documentation:

• .NET Framework 4.6.1 is the final version of the .NET Framework supported on Windows 8 (Build 9200), which is the final build of Windows 8.
• .NET Framework 4.6.2 and later are not supported on Windows 8; these versions require Windows 8.1, Windows 10, or Windows 11.

Since Bitdefender VPN Premium requires .NET Framework 4.7.2 or later, it cannot be installed on Windows 8.

The recommended course of action is to upgrade your operating system:

• At a minimum, upgrade to Windows 8.1, which supports .NET Framework 4.7.2.
• For long-term support and enhanced security, upgrading to Windows 10 or Windows 11 is strongly advised, as these versions include .NET Framework 4.8 by default.

In summary: Windows 8 is limited to .NET Framework 4.6.1. To successfully install Bitdefender VPN Premium, an upgrade to Windows 8.1 or later is required.

To add, I have also reported the issue to Bitdefender Support, noting that the Bitdefender Premium VPN website ( https://www.bitdefender.com/en-us/consumer/vpn  ) states that the operating system requirements for Bitdefender Premium VPN are Windows 7 with Service Pack 1, Windows 8.1, Windows 10, and Windows 11, with a minimum .NET Framework requirement of v4.7.2, whereas the user guide on the same website indicates that Windows 8 is also supported with a minimum .NET Framework requirement of v4.5.2.
