Need help with understanding this prompt

I am on Windows so I am trying to understand why WSLservice, which to my understanding is the Windows support for Linux is doing this as I don't use Linux. I guess I have 2 questions here. 1 can anyone explain what is going on here. 2 can anyone help me resolve this issue.

Even if WSL is disabled, the file could still exist on the system. Check if it’s the legitimate Microsoft file. Open Task Manager, find wslservice.exe, right-click and ppen file location. The legitimate file should be located in C:\Windows\System32\. Then right-click on properties, and go to digital signatures. The signer should be Microsoft Windows. If it’s located anywhere else, or not digitally signed by Microsoft, that would require further investigation.

On Windows 11 especially, parts of WSL are sometimes pre-staged by Windows even if you’ve never used them. The service binary can exist without the feature being fully enabled. I think Bitdefender is simply detecting a background Windows component attempting network communication, so not malware.

Thank you so much I believe I have been able to finally deal with that file. It was in my NVIDIA folder and just said Python. I managed to remove it and I am no longer getting the alerts about it anymore. I also managed to track down the legitimate file which as you said was where it was supposed to be and was signed by Microsoft Windows.

Hello,

That service manages WSL (windows subsystem for Linux) sessions and communication between Windows and Linux processes under WSL. It runs in the background even if you don’t actively use Linux distributions.
Bitdefender can show prompts for legitimate system services when it detects unusual network activity or attempts to connect externally (e.g., WSL networking), especially if the Firewall is in Alert mode. The alert can also be a false positive.

Like I mentioned earlier, even though you don’t manually use WSL, the wslservice.exe service can start automatically on Windows systems where the feature is installed or partially enabled. If you don’t use WSL at all, you can disable the Windows subsystem for Linux in Windows Features:

Open Control Panel → Programs → Turn Windows features on or off
Uncheck “Windows Subsystem for Linux”
Reboot your PC

This will stop the wslservice.exe service from running. After disabling it, the Bitdefender prompt should no longer appear.

thank you for the help. When I went to disable the feature with your directions above, it already shows it as being disabled. Are there any other ways to resolve this issue.
