Fix the problems with your buggy buggy app!

After years of putting up with this poor quality, buggy software, I'm out.

This company takes years, and years and years to fail to fix even the simplest issues with its own software.

The sofware fails to keep settings, the profile system doesn't work properly, the logs are completely hidden and the interface is clunky and unintuitive.

Every single fing time I change the Update frequency this app changes it back.

I can't play a game without this buggy pos interupting me with scan results, even though I've turned them off. Conversely, the app fails to notify me if there's a threat. Scheduled scans don't run consistently.

There seems to be absolutely no work going into resolving any of the issues.

The latest marvel is from the Vulnerability scan. It tells me that a critical update for Windows needs to be installed. I cross-referenced this in Windows "Check for updates". There are no updates. In the wonder that is "Bitdefender", there is an "Install" button below this hugely critical update that needs to be done. I press the Install button and ….. nothing happens. This level of programming is embarrasingly, laughably, bad.

Guess when KB2267602 was released? TWO years ago. This allged security software is warning me to update Windows 2 years late!

I've really had enough now. How can I have any trust in an AV product that I have no control over and which even its developers can't fix?

The problem is that forwarding issues to Bitdefender Support does nothing.

I have been receiving regular emails from support for two and a half years, telling me that the issue I reported in 2004 is still being investigated but no solution has been found.

This is an issue with the interface and settings options of the company’s own product.

It’s shockingly poor service and I actually feel insulted by the replies I get, and the closing of threads which point to unresolved issues from years ago.

I no longer have any confidence in Bitdefender as a reliable AV solution.

If you can’t even get the detail of your front-end working properly, what’s actually going on with the back-end?

Vulnerability scan reports updates as the Windows Update client component (wuapi.dll) reports. It is not something we display on a whim. Admittedly, there is a cache of "last known updates" we maintain, and that might become, in case of sudden crashes, become desychronized. It's the file winupdates.xml in C:\ProgramData\Bitdefender\Desktop.

About contacting support, they are not doing nothing. I personally assisted them with several remote support cases with similar Windows Updates being reported even if Windows Update did not - and I think in all those cases those updates were failing to install (but Windows Update did not show them for some reason), and we successfully fixed them by deleting winupdates.xml file and re-running Vulnerability Scan.

A primary reason for failures in any company which result in a loss of customer confidence is the inability to admit that there are failings which need to be addressed. The stance is that the product/service is perfect, so why does anything need to change? Add to that the fan boy toxicity of many tech companies, which breeds hubristic and defensive responses, and there’s no chance of any real resolutions.

This is not a personal attack on a human being, nor is it a negative attack on an amateur-produced freeware app. This is legitimate feedback from a longstanding customer about a commercially available and paid-for software product which does not operate as it should. I have diligently reported these issues both directly to support and on these forums time and time again. Some have been fixed. Some have been fixed, then broken again. Some have not been fixed at all. I have cleanly uninstalled and reinstalled multiple times. I’ve given Bitdefender a very good run and now it’s time to move on.

Would you mind sharing to which alternative you plan to move? I've become disgruntled with a number of (paid) alternatives - too slow, too bloated, too obtrusive, etc. I'm curious what you found to be better than BD. Thanks.

I’ve not decided yet. Overall the AV market is flooded with slow, intrusive bloatware, so there’s not exactly a great choice. Professionally and personally I’ve used quite a few AV products over the past 30 years. The term ‘better’ doesn’t, objectively, mean much. It’s more about which best suits one’s circumstances. To be fair, I’ve been with Bitdefender probably the longest out of all of them, but for me it’s become bloated, intrusive and unreliable.

I’ll be looking for something that will keep its settings. Bitdefender, ime, changes its configuration settings silently. For example, checking for updates defaults to 8 hours after I’ve changed it to a smaller value. The Spam protection turns itself on after I’ve turned it off. The profile options don’t seem to stop it from popping up some message during a game. Logging is inconsistent. Scheduled scans don’t run consistently. Bugs with the interface don’t get fixed, despite reporting them directly to support. After years of using it, I still find the interface to be very unintuitive.

Obviously the most important consideration is a product’s ability to detect the nasty stuff, and to a certain extent it’s that aspect of Bitdefender that has kept me with it for much longer than I would have otherwise put up with the annoyances.
