Scan with Bitdefender option is not working.

Hi, as it says in the title, the Scan with Bitdefender option in the windows right-click menu does not work.

Initially when this first happened a couple of weeks ago, I just reinstalled Bitdefender, but that only fixed it temporarily. Now the option is broken againl. The file shredder option is fine. It opens the file shredder window works. Just the Scan with Bitdefender option is broken. Everything else seems to be ok.

Has anyone come across this before?

  • I'm facing the exact same issue, did you find an easy fix? I find it annoying that I now need to go trough support to fix something as basic as this on what's supposed to be a market leader…

  • Hello @Manuel Duarte,

Try to run a repair and see if this fixes the issue:

  • Hello @Alexandru_BD, thank you for the reply.

I'll eventually try that one more time, but I'm not optimistic as this would be the third time doing that. I have done exactly that one time, and another time I've tried to uninstall it completely and try a new install.

I've been using Bitdefender since May and it's the third time this happens to me. As easy as it is, it really bothers me that I need to do this seemingly every month or so to be able to use a feature that I consider absolutely basic/essential. To be honest, if it happens again I'm not sure whether I'll try to open a ticket with the support or give up and ask for a refund, despite the fact that I'm loving everything other thing about Bitdefender so far.

I'm an information security professional with quite some experience using and administering different AV/EDR solutions, and although I'm aware that this sort of software is extremely difficult to develop/implement for every machine out there, the truth is that I've never had nearly as many issues with other AV solutions and I gotta do what's best for my machines.

If it helps, the machine where I'm getting the problems is running Windows 11 Pro x64 with an AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D and a NVIDIA Graphic Card.

    Best regards,

    Manuel Duarte

  • Hi @Manuel Duarte,

Yes, the operating system information is helpful. Because this could actually be related to the new context menu in Windows 11.

The easiest way to access the old context menus in Windows 11 is to press shift + right-click instead of just right-clicking. When you press shift + right-click, the old context menu will open instead of the new one. This works throughout Windows 11, so you can use it on the desktop, file folders, files, and other places where you used to access the old context menus in the past.

The other way to access to old context menus is to go through the new context menu by clicking show more options:

The old context menu will appear and the option to scan with Bitdefender should be available there.

Is it displayed for you if you click on 'show more options'?

Anyway, the developers are also looking for ways to enhance visibility for the context menu scan option in Windows 11.

  • Or use the software provided in the link below to make it easier for you. There are two context menu software options: one can revert the context menu to the old classic one, and the other can help you add the software you want to the context menu. I personally use these.

  • Hi again @Alexandru_BD, thank you for the reply. The context menu shouldn't be the issue, as I disable it in every fresh Windows install (ever since they launched the new context menu). Or maybe even the fact that I'm disabling it is causing the issue. I'm doing it through Wintoys, an app on Windows App Store, and as far as I know it disables the new context menu through the disabling and enabling of registry keys. I've done this after installing Bitdefender.

As for the issue itself, I don't know why, but the problem solved itself without the need for a repair/reinstall. I had already tried every reboot option so far (shutdown, restart, shutdown without fast reboot enabled), but after a Windows update reboot the problem was solved. I'll open a new ticket/forum thread if the problem presents itself again.

    Thank you for your patience,

    Manuel Duarte

  • Hey @Flexx, thanks for the suggestions. I've already disable the new context menu through the use of Wintoys (which among many other options allows you to disable the new context menu), but I'll look through that option to add the software I want to it, as it may come in handy.

    Best regards,

    Manuel Duarte

  • I've had an open ticket with BD since July 2024 and this bug still isn't fixed. From time to time I get an email saying it's fixed and I should update BD but the only time it worked it was fixed until I rebooted the computer. I'm running Windows 11 Home and keep it updated (latest update installed this morning).

However, as indicated by others previously, it's possible to access the 'Scan with Bitdefender' option by opening the 'Show more options' submenu. Scanning from that submenu works. Unlike the OP, the File Shredder option also does not work from the top level context menu but does work if I use the 'Show more options' submenu.

Another, less convenient workaround is to copy the file to be scanned to the Windows desktop, right-click that, and run the scan. That works perfectly but is far less convenient than accessing the scanner from the 'Show more options' submenu.
