Does bitdefender Vpn contain obfuscated Servers

Nord vpn offers obfuscated Servers , they say:

Obfuscated servers are specialized VPN servers that hide the fact that you’re using a VPN to reroute your traffic. They allow users to connect to a VPN even in heavily restrictive environments.

When you connect to a regular VPN server, your ISP can’t see where you go online. But it knows that you’re using a VPN from the way your data looks. However, if you connect to an obfuscated server, it changes your data packets. Therefore, tools that are meant to block VPN traffic let it pass. No one notices you’re using a VPN, unless they inspect your data packets manually.

Obfuscated servers are used to bypass VPN-blocking firewalls. To do that, a VPN provider must remove all information related to a VPN from your data so that it looks like regular data packets.

VPN providers can obfuscate data in a few different ways. For example, data packets can be hidden using additional SSL/SSH encryption so that all the VPN metadata is out of sight. Think of it as encryption to conceal your encryption.

Data can also be scrambled, hiding the metadata from the packet header. This way, it looks like regular HTTPS traffic filled with meaningless information. Firewalls can’t recognize it, so they let it pass.

Some internal networks, ISPs, and even countries might ban VPN usage. Obfuscated servers will help you bypass these restrictions. Once you connect, firewalls and VPN blocks won’t be able to recognize that your traffic is coming from a VPN server.

Is bitdefender currently using this technique ?

No, that I know of, as otherwise BD would have made an announcement regarding that feature, and that setting would be seen in the VPN as an option.

Kindly first get in touch with the support team of Hotspot Shield, as Bitdefender VPN is based on the infrastructure of Hotspot Shield. If their servers are made obfuscated, the same will automatically apply to Bitdefender VPN.

Furthermore, on checking the NordVPN website, it clearly mentions that even obfuscated servers can be tracked down easily.

    https://nordvpn.com/features/obfuscated-servers/

You need to understand that in today's cybersecurity world, everything is traceable. When security agencies can track Tor websites and shut down illegal ones, a VPN can also be easily tracked down.

Let me provide you with an example: connect to any VPN server via your VPN service provider software, open the website https://www.browserscan.net/ , and run a browser scan. Below, you can see my results.

I have connected to a Romanian IP

But my original timezone is also shown as Asia/Calcutta

This thing has already been shared with Bitdefender developers too, but there are certain situations that cannot be controlled.

@Flexx Thanks for your kind attention. You're right about the latest techniques for detecting internet traffic. NordVPN's obfuscated servers obscure their traffic to appear like regular internet traffic, making it less likely to be identified as originating from a VPN by surveillance authorities and countrywide firewalls (which often slow down or interfere with browsing). Nord VPN claims this technology can even bypass the Great Firewall of China.

I wanted to learn from experienced users here, as you've provided great information about VPNs. I know it's a long shot, but I tried. Bitdefender support is useless. When I simply asked if they have servers in my country (as some VPNs do), they launched into a lengthy email exchange demanding to know why I needed this "secret" information. Their email support takes several days to respond. This process took several days. Eventually, they confirmed they have no servers in my country and that the government can't force them to hand over data.

In my country, the government is controlled by corrupt politicians who ve hijacked the X regime , Journalists like me are being killed, arrested, and tortured. The government monitors our social media, which is our only way to report the truth, as mainstream media is controlled by them. We need maximum security measures, which is why I asked about obfuscated servers.

Now about your tests , if you may edit few things the concerned website ll not be able to detect the time difference , when the screenshot was taken i was using a virtual location of the bitdefender vpn : plz ve a look:

    you may edit this :

I'm confused why my Bitdefender VPN is connecting to a server outside of Japan, which is causing the server time to display differently than Japan/Tokyo time. I've checked all the settings, but I can't seem to change the server time even though it's not explicitly highlighted on the website. Do you have any idea how to fix this

  • Well, this is weird. The time from the IP and JavaScript should be the same since both the original IP and the VPN IP are from Tokyo, Japan. I'm out of thoughts as to why this is happening. @Scott, do you have any insights on why this might be occurring?

Additionally, @Rock.87, you can reach out to the BrowserScan support team by emailing them at support@browserscan.net. They might be able to provide more information on this.

@Flexx I'm not sure why it's happening, but as an example this is with ProtonVPN. I apologize, I should get the new install of BD VPN up and running, and confirm if I have the Premium version to be more helpful in that way.

@Rock.87 you may have found this by now, but here is a list of the BD VPN server locations.

edit: reposted the image, the other one was a default BrowserScan.

  • I know that Proton VPN's free version only offers automatic server selection. By any chance, could you download a random VPN extension and check whether it shows the same information or something different?

Well, my goodness my friend, that was a interesting test. Here is from Protons Chrome extension.

No wonder the Chrome store ratings were 2.5 ;)

Here again is from the desktop app.

  • The image shows the VPN IP-based location as New York, while the original location is Chicago. I need to verify whether you can connect to any VPN server outside the USA. It’s important to check if the VPN server location and the original location differ. If they are different, the original location can still be tracked even with the VPN enabled. Although the USA-based servers show different locations, tracking may still be possible. I suggest checking third-party extensions that offer VPN servers outside your home country for further testing.

Since the free version will only connect to the nearest server, sometime this weekend I'll fire up BD VPN and connect outside the US :)

The Nord vpn extension tries to match it's user's location with the vpn's virtual location but the website shows 2 different times , keep in mind that there is no time difference in the whole state of kolkata.

it passed the other tests without using any other extension, but it's the website's fault that it can not check that the state has only one time, it should highlight it as 2 different time zones.

@Flexx Here is the follow-up, going outside the US. This is not Bitdefender VPN, as on that PC I have Proton desktop app installed, and didn't want to enable another VPN on that PC. Last time I did that, enabling BD Premium on a PC that had Nord on it, it permanently broke my network. I had to Reset the notebook to get back online. It was time for a clean install anyway ;) :)

So here is a different VPN (F-Secure) from another notebook.

Here are the main things I consider using a VPN, what servers is it connecting to, and how many.

With DNS Leaktest, it was only one server on both the Standard and Extended tests.

    IP Leaktest.

This is another factor for me. I am not logged out of my Google account and it is correctly showing me from Canada when doing Google searches.

As far as the differences of ip time zone and Java ****** differences, I'm not sure, and to be honest, I'm not worried about it. It's one of those things I don't understand or have an answer for. If you can find a VPN where everything matches up, let me know :) If I were a journalist in a hostile country using a VPN, I'd probably want to do more in researching it better. There's nothing more I can add, so I'm tapping out out this thread :)

    Cheers

Yep, unfortunately you're the one in that situation (journalist as you mentioned), I'm just not sure if it's anything that can be resolved, or it that's just how the internet, VPN, servers etc work together? IMO, maybe start a thread on Malwaretips forum, as there are multiple IT tech type of members who could, would possibly have more insight to help you.

I do know one thing in general, Mullvad is an excellent VPN, privacy wise and performance wise.

It seems like they’re trying to target the “BEST IN THE UNIVERSE,” but tracking the untrackable is like trying to staple water to a wall. It’s the kind of challenge that makes even the most advanced tech look like a toddler with a toy hammer—good luck with that! Even the universe is probably shaking its head—LOL!

@Rock.87, as @Scott mentioned, you might want to create an account on the MalwareTips website—they can definitely help with your query. I personally know a guy named Mr. Jonny Quest on the forum, and let me tell you, he's basically the Sherlock Holmes of the MalwareTips forum. Reach out to him directly, and he’ll help you solve your query faster than a detective with a magnifying glass—seriously, he’s that good! You’ll have the answers you’re searching for in no time.

@Alexandru_BD and @Flexx contrary to the above site 😉😊 the Bitdefender community is doing very well 😊😊

  • Well, yes, the Bitdefender motto is called "Trusted, Always" for a reason. 😉

As for Malwaretips, that's a legitimate forum as far as I know. And I think we also have members from our community who can vouch for that. Honestly, I wouldn't rely much on what that "scam adviser" displays.
You can use the latest Bitdefender Link Checker for free and this should bring peace of mind. Instead of relying on "computer algorithm" and the "40 data points", this URL checker uses AI-powered ‘small engines’ and cross-references the URL with up-to-date security databases, analyzing the site’s behaviour on top:

    https://www.bitdefender.com/en-us/consumer/link-checker

Clearly, Malwaretips is a safe page to use:

Bitdefender Scamio says, "Everything has to come to an end, everything has an expiry, but I never expected they'd replace me so quickly with this newly launched Bitdefender Link Scanner! Still, even if they forget me, it's my duty—whether they like it or not—to provide help! 😂

  • Funny @Flexx. 😄

But these two are not the same thing. Scamio is specifically designed for messaging apps and social platforms where users might encounter scam links in private or group chats. They can share suspicious links with Scamio to get an immediate safety assessment, and the chatbot also provides further advice on how to protect yourself against scams, so there's also an educational component. Scamio combines artificial intelligence with Bitdefender’s exceptional threat-detection algorithms, machine learning, pattern recognition, and advanced data analysis techniques to identify even the most sophisticated scams. It relies on chatbot-style interaction, giving results in a conversational format and it's available on the web or as a contact on WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger. Recently, it has been made available on Discord as well.

On the other hand, the Link Checker focuses more on web browsing safety and it's not integrated with any other apps, you can simply enter the URL there and it will give you a verdict if it's safe or not, so just a Y/N type of response.

Wow.. i am so happy that we have our own link checker…awesome. cheers😍,

Does Bitdefender offer additional security tools? I highly recommend including this information in the Bitdefender antivirus section.
bitdefender vpn is badly hit by the nationwide firewall now a days. takes hell of time to open a simple site, any expected fix Alex ? web browsing is very annoying now a days due to this..
Nord vpn protocols ve also become problematic except p2p. need an urgent fix, can you forward this request to the bit team ?

  • Hi @Rock.87,

I'm sorry to hear this, but I can't really forward such generic information. I think it's best to discuss this with Bitdefender Support, since they always have records of possible ongoing connection problems, and can provide specific guidance and workarounds, once they know all the details and symptoms. This may involve some troubleshooting which cannot be achieved on the forum. Now, I know you've contacted the Support teams before, but I'll leave the link below anyway:

    https://www.bitdefender.com/consumer/support/help/

In addition to this, please note that the Support engineers may require some specific information from you, so they can assist in troubleshooting VPN errors, slowdowns and other connection issues. The mandatory information required is the following:

    1. The OS on which the VPN is running.
    2. The affected account.
    3. For functionality issues while the VPN is connected, whether the problem occurs on a specific location or all locations
    4. IP(s) of the affected server(s)
    5. For split tunneling issues they would need to know the applications/sites affected.
    6. If using standalone VPN or VPN in BMS
    7. Whether the problem occurs only on mobile data or only on Wi-Fi or present on both. Preferably try multiple networks.
    8. App version.

    I hope this helps.
