Windows 11 reboot loop February 2025

After 2 days of troubleshooting Windows 11, I have narrowed the issue to Bitdefender as it attempts to update, and partway through, it triggers a reboot, which becomes loop about every 15 minutes. The firewall also seems to be part of the issue.

At the moment, I have turned off the Bitdefender firewall and reset updates to occur only upon rebooting. I would prefer to turn off updates altogether until the issue is fixed, but that is not an option.

Do you have a better solution?

Are you using Windows 11 build 27788.1000 (canary)? I'm also getting a BSOD during the update cycle.

Looking at the bug check, it's reporting:

KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE (139)

Referencing bddci.sys and bddci4.sys.

Based on system32\drivers, I suspect the BD update is trying to replace bddci4 and failing.

Fingers crossed, this gives the BD dev teams something to work with.

*I know some will think, "Don't use canary", but someone has to, and I'm happy to be a guinea pig

Similar here. Every 20 min or so the machine dies during a BD update.

Same problem, Bitdefender attempts to update, and partway through, it triggers a reboot generating the green screen with error "bddci4.sys" failed. Just started happening a week ago.

I'm running Win 11 canary 27788.

Bitdefender tech support recognized the issue and fixed it. They gave me a list of steps that would allow me to uninstall and reinstall, which took hours, online with tech support some of that time.

Basically it involved running System File Checker, running chkdsk c: /r as administrator. Ultimately, it found corrupted files and repaired them. After this, I uninstalled and reinstalled Bitdefender. 😊

I had to take a slightly different path to get mine running, as the uninstaller was giving BSODs on the same file. What solved it for me was:

Ran CMD as administrator
Triggered "sfc /scannow"
Rebooted
Ran the appropriate uninstaller from: https://www.bitdefender.com/links/uninstall_consumer_paid.html
Rebooted
Confirmed "bddci.sys and bddci4.sys" were gone from System32\drivers
Re-installed BitDefender

So far, 24 hours with no BSODs - Fingers-crossed.

We are aware of the issue, and a fix is currently rolling out. However, you may need to uninstall Bitdefender in Safe Mode(or Uninstall Tool) and then install the new kit version, as the update can still trigger the B/GSOD.
The kit version should end in .239 or higher. I will follow up once it's available to all users.

I have cured the problem by un-installing BD on my machine using the BD Uninstaller. Normal MS un-install via Control Panel / Programs and Features did not work. After using the BD Uninstaller I looked for any BD folders/files to delete but did not find any. Then I went to BD Central and removed my current machine. I then re-installed it from BD central and it worked.

So far it seems fine and i have several BD updates with no problems.

Right now, you should have a version ending in .237. Meanwhile, we are rolling out .239 to more and more users, and it’s likely this update will fail on Insider Canary builds. As soon as the .239 kits are available, I’ll post an update here. After that, you shouldn’t encounter any further issues.

Same problem for me. I did all of this :

But the problem reappeared after I reinstalled Bitdefender and then it tried to install update.

We have just released updated installation kits that include fixes for this exact issue.

A fresh installation from Central is required to fix the issue permanently.
