On-demand Help Needed

I have read the thread titled Bd A/v 2008 On-demand, and I see that the advice given is, "if you need an on-demand scanner then I suggest also to use the free version" and "if all you want is an on-demand scanner, better use free edition, v. 10".

That is what I want to do.... I would like to continue using BitDefender as an on-demand only AV scanner, which I have had great success doing with BitDefender 8 Free Edition.

Unfortunately, my attempts to do this with BitDefender 10 Free Edition did not go well (using bitdefender_free_v10.exe).

It seems that enough services and shields were being installed for a full time resident protection AV. I don't recall this being the case with BitDefender 8 Free Edition.

What I would like to know is, what services can I/should I disable in BitDefender 10 Free Edition to make this program an on-demand scanner only?

For example, vsserv.exe, some sort of library process (?), keeps wanting to act as a server, according to ZoneAlarm. It is not needed for on-demand scanning, is it?

And BDAgent.exe, which wants to start up, is not needed, is it?

But I believe that I do have to keep BDMCon.exe running in order for the program to work, correct?

Again, with BitDefender 10 Free Edition, there seems to be a lot of stuff trying to start up that shouldn't have anything to do with an on-demand scanner.

I have gone back to BitDefender 8 Free Edition until someone advises me what I am doing wrong, or what it is I need to do to get BitDefender 10 Free Edition to run as on-demand scanner only, without so many real time services and shields starting up and running.

Thank you.

  • A little help, anybody, please?

    I am only a volunteer.

bdagent.exe is only needed in a multiple user environment.

vsserv.exe is used for realtime protection.

bdmcon.exe is necessary to let all functions work together.

And that is why I said please and thank you, Neils.

What is your view with BitDefender 10 Free Edition having a lot of stuff trying to start up that shouldn't have anything to do with an on-demand scanner?

You are right that for example the vsserv.exe don't do anything in the on demand version. In BitDefender 8.0 free the vsserv.exe was also running. The processes are still the same. But now a root kit scanner is implemented but that process starts only when you execute a scan.
