Bitdefender 10 Free And Bdfsdrv.sys
Greetings all,
I uninstalled BitDefender 8 free and installed – v 10 free.
Mainly, the intention is to use it only as an additional on-demand scanner with real- time Guard disabled.
I did not have any problems with BD 8 that way. There were 2 services they were set as Disabled. When BD Updates/Shell Extension/Full scan were needed I was setting those two services to Manual then Start’em and “Bob’s your uncle”.
BD 10 introduced another 2 services. And there is bdagent.exe running on Startup
The whole set is
======== Services ======
BitDefender Communicator:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Softwin\BitDefender Communicator\xcommsvr.exe" /service
LIVESRV:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Softwin\BitDefender Update Service\livesrv.exe" /service
BDSS:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Softwin\BitDefender Scan Server\bdss.exe" /service
VSSERV:
C:\Program Files\Softwin\BitDefender10\vsserv.exe" /service
===Startup Entry:
"C:\Program Files\Softwin\BitDefender10\bdagent.exe"
So, in order to work as described above I did the similar to what was usually done painlessly with BD 8.
1) all services stopped and disabled
2)
======= Disabled on startup (from SpyBot report) =======
Located: HK_LM:Run, BDAgent (DISABLED)
command: "C:\Program Files\Softwin\BitDefender10\bdagent.exe"
file: C:\Program Files\Softwin\BitDefender10\bdagent.exe
size: 69632
MD5: 2ffa83a15bc21c5b3f336d96f19b47e6
========================================
Fine
Then I ran a few tests to see how it goes with Enabling / Updates / Scans
And it was a real mess!
- Updates may run or may hang.
- vsserv.exe may (sometimes) crash with Exception errors .memory cannot be… you know.
- Other programs crashing with Exception Errors
- It doesn’t matter whether I stop and disable BD services system remains unstable and sometimes hangs.
The only way – is to Restart the computer but disable services prior to that.
I was going to reinstall BD10 but I didn’t, and went for a bit of a deeper search.
I found this:
======= (Autoruns SysInternals Report) =======
BDFsDrv File not found: C:\Program Files\Softwin\BitDefender10\bdfsdrv.sys
BDRsDrv File not found: C:\Program Files\Softwin\BitDefender10\bdrsdrv.sys
=======================================
Yes, 2 (two times)
I checked – indeed - no such file.
I found some Q about similar thing on the Net (this forum included). As I could understand it reinstallation didn’t help.
So what I did was just un-checking those two entries from startup using AutoRuns and since that time I do not have any problems with BD10 and with system instability.
All functions needed to run it as on-demand scanner, updates, changes of any possible settings … all works smooth and fine.
Now, you already know my questions
What is this missing bdrsdrv.sys?
Why it’s messing up BD 10 and the system if unsuccessfully tries to run on Startup
And why it is kinda “not needed at all”?
Thanks in advance
My regards

I too have the same problem with BitDefender10 free edition. I too have system instability and went as far as disabling all BitDefender services. I just looked and I too have these two file not found entries. I have unchecked them and will see if that helps.0 -
WHY SHOULD ANY SERVICES FOR A PIECE OF SOFTWARE NEED TO BE DISABLED!!!!!!!!
I have been struggling with V10 free edition. I have searched your forums about the two services that refuse to run AND are NOWHERE to be found (bdfsdrv and bdrsdrv) with the two entries in event viewer (Win 2000 sp4).
The final straw was when I was using a Printed circuit board cad package and searching a library. The search froze, killed itself, and/or BSOD with bad_pool_call.
I AM SICK OF BD SAYING IT IS THE USERS PROBLEM. I have manually edited the registry of ALL other AV software, removed ALL hidden drivers in device manager, and STILL am having problems.
I HAVE HAD IT!!!!!!
GOOD BY BIT DEFENDER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am glad I have NOT spent any money on this "thing"!0 -

Hi Frustrated, (don't be... )
Thanks for replying.
It will be interesting to hear from your experience with this.
I don't see any malfunctioning since I did that and using it as on-demand scanner only.

Hi pomonabill220,
I specifically left only that extract of the quote.
1) the services were listed (see my initial post, please)
bdfsdrv and bdrsdrv (sys) are not the services ("...drv.sys" - usually drivers)
it is strange that you cannot find those entries with "file not found" ???
you can see the confirmation of this in reply from Frustrated and even in a separate thread in this forum, and in other places on the Net
2)
"WHY SHOULD ANY SERVICES FOR A PIECE OF SOFTWARE NEED TO BE DISABLED!!!!!!!!"
first, you may probably missed my point of using BD as on-demand scanner only (I set those Manual and Start when needed)
... and I have a few other AV Software which I use like that.
So, in order not to interfere with my Main AV - it has to be done with those services I initially listed
But speaking about system services as a whole in conjunction with your question... well ... I have 47 services disabled in my XP Pro
They are unneeded they slow down the system they take memory, many of them are great security holes...etc.
System works perfectly, fast. I have home network another XP, win200 Pro, and Mac, and often connect another PCs & Macs laptops to the ADSL/Router
all see Internet and each other... so why do I need those spare services?? ??

Hello SwampCat,
What is this missing bdrsdrv.sys?
bdrsdrv.sys, in BDv10, is a file that is used to monitor and scan the registry
bdfsdrv.sys, in BDv10, is a file that is used to monitor and scan the accessed files.
Both files were removed in the free version (BDv10 Free), because this version doesn't have any Realtime protection modules. As it seems, they forgot to prevent the files from being registered as startup items.
I reported this to TechSupport and they said that they will look into it. However, because we are talking about the Free version, the support is kinda limited, so the fix might not appear very soon.Why it's messing up BD 10 and the system if unsuccessfully tries to run on Startup
It messes up the installation because BD wasn't made to run without those files.
How you can fix it? Well...your solution seems logical enough so, if it works, use it like that.
And why it is kinda "not needed at all"?
Because they were used in Realtime Protection. Since that module was removed (and those files also), then you don't need them.

Hello Cris,
Thanks a lot for replying.
I left those extracts from your answer because you spent your time and patently, comprehensively answered all 3 Q of mine.
.... not because I am very proud about my findings and "solutions".... (not really and not very much )...
...just some programming experience... and it is rather a workaround... that in combination with your explanations may help others.
My kind regards
