One Problem...

Hello! I have a problem with windows xp professional... It doesn't recognise shortcuts anymore. One friend used a program to clean unused registry on my computer. I'm not an expert, so I don't really know what happened, and neither does he. Do you know what should I do? I know I should talk about viruses problems here but I hope it's ok. Please help me or guide me to another source of information of what I should do.

Thank you and have a blessed new year!

  • sorry tried to google it but no luck

  • I don't think the problem is malware related, instead, maybe that program "cleaned" important keys in your registry and caused this trouble. Please try using System Restore, to restore your computer to an earlier point, before your friend ran that cleaning tool. Post if it helped.

    Happy new year!

  • Hello! Well it looks like I can't find the file: %SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe anymore. I tried Start-All Programs-Accesories-System Tools-System Restore and it doesn't work (Windows can't find the file). And again, Task Manager it doesn't work (Ctrl-Alt-Delete).

    Thank you!

  • Hello Gabby,

Try this: put in the CD-ROM drive the Windows Installation Disc, then open Start -> Run -> cmd <Enter> and, in cmd, type sfc /scannow. It will check the important system files and restore the missing/modified ones from the installation kit.

If this doesn't work, ultimately you can make a repair installation of Windows. Just put the Windows disc in your CD-ROM, and choose Repair current installation (it won't remove any of your files, nor settings, nor format your HDD. It will just overwrite all system files with copies from the CD, leacing all other applications in the state that they are now).

    Cris.
