Installer Forced Romanian Language Fix.

I've had trouble installing the free version on multiple systems.

They always defaulted to the Romanian language with the language pulldown menu greyed out.

So you were stuck with the Romanian language.

The problem lies in 2 of the XML installer scripts and possibly the installer itself.

The solution is the following:

1) Download either the x64 or the x86 installer:

- For x86 http://download.bitdefender.com/npd/free/A...Edition_x86.exe

- For x64 http://download.bitdefender.com/npd/free/A...Edition_x64.exe

2) Make a folder called "Bitdefender_Installer"

3) Just to be sure (point 7) make a folder called "install" inside that one.

4) Extract the installer with WinRAR into the "install" folder.

5) Modify both the "install_x86.xml" and the "install_x64.xml" file.

- Change the line "<DefaultLanguage>ro-RO</DefaultLanguage>" so it reads "<DefaultLanguage>en-US</DefaultLanguage>" and save the files.

- Optionally, you can use "ro-RO", "it-IT", "pt-BR" or leave it blank for the language selector.

- Create a new MD5 checksum for these files. Programs like "QuickSFV" can so this for you.

- Open the "install_x86.xml.md5" and "install_x64.xml.md5" files and put in the new checksum and save.

6) Open the "Installer.exe" file and you will see it defaulted to English.

7) After installation the "Bitdefender_Installer" and "install" folder cannot be deleted due to a rights or permissions problem.

- Rename the "Bitdefender_Installer" folder to something else like "Bitdefender_DeleteMeNow" and you can now remove it.

8) Done!

I hope the developers will fix this nagging bug.

It happened on various systems: Windows Vista / 7 x86 and x64 Dutch (NL)

  • Bitdefender Free Antivirus is available in certain countries only. If you try to install Bitdefender Free Antivirus and your IP is not between the allowed countries you'll get the default language of the kit(which is Romanian in this case).

For NL we have Bitdefender Antivirus Essential which is a payed product but you can use the trial for 30 days.

  • How to get Bitdefender Antivirus Free in English?

    1. Download Bitdefender Free from http://www.bitdefender.com/solutions/free.html. In some countries, you will be redirected. In that case you can use http://download.bitdefender.com/npd/free/A...ree_Edition.exe.
    2. Just open the file "Antivirus_Free_Edition.exe" and wait untill the installation files are unpacked. Do not install!
    3. Go to your temporary folder (Start - Run - %temp% - Enter). The installation files are in folder "RarSFX0".
    4. Copy this folder to "RarSFX0-Copy".
    5. Close the installer. Folder "RarSFX0" will be removed.
    6. Open folder "lang" in folder "RarSFX0-Copy".
    7. Open the file "lang.xml" in notepad.
    8. Remove all languages below tag <languages> except for language "en-US".
    9. Save the file and close Notepad.
    10. Start the installer by opening "Installer.exe" in folder "RarSFX0-Copy".
  • Had the same problem trying to install bitdefender on a Windows 7 NL dutch computer.

This worked for me. I only made a new md5 file after changing the lang.xml file. I used md5summer for this.

  • I was not entirely accurate in my previous post. I actually used a combination of the 2 proposed methods. These were the steps I took.

1 - downloaded bitdefender installer from CNET

2 - unpack file in a folder on my NAS

    3 - edited the install_x64.xml file. Changed ro-RO to en-US

4 - used md5summer to generate a new .md5 file. (Be sure to add the .xml extension when saving md5 file)

    5 - run installer.exe

It now uses the english language in the interface and in the installed program.

  • There's a much simpler solution...

Pull out your networkcable (or disable the interface), start the installer and continue until it complains that it can't download a file, then just enable your internet again and you're good!

If the installer you downloaded is only very small (mine was 159 KB), then just run that normally first and it should download an x86 or x64 installer for you. Then just close it when it starts babbling at you in Romanian, and start the downloaded file with your internet disabled.

Thank you Pepijn! You're brilliant! I wished I had read your post sooner, because I had first tried it the difficult way.

The best reply. Why go the hard way when you have something as simple as what Sanderb suggested? Undoubtedly the best solution.

    Thanks a ton Sanderb :)
