Bitdefender 2008 Does Not Install On Vista

Hi,

I have downloaded the trial version of Bitdefender Antivirus 2008 and tried to install it on my notebook with Vista Business 64.

After starting the downloaded file there is some download procedure and afterwards a "Preparing to install ..." screen appears. After that it suddenly stops and the process disappears from the task manager. When trying again the download is skipped but the same happens after "Preparing to install ...".

Unfortunately the support itself seems to be limited to users who already bought and obviously I don't want to buy without knowing that it will run. So I was hoping that I might find a solution in this forum.

Thanks and regards, Robert

  • Hello Robert,

    LiveAssistance can be used by anyone, regardless if you bought BitDefender or you are only in trial period.

    About your problem, check that you have the correct BitDefender version (the 64bit version, not the 32bit version).

    Also, be sure to run the installer with Administrator credentials (right-click on the BD installer and select Run as Administrator). I'd even suggest that you dully disable User Account Control, because it might interfere with BitDefender's installation (also, after you install BD, UAC might prevent it to run correctly).

    Hi Cris,

    Thanks for your reply!

    When downloading BitDefender Antivirus 2008 I never got the option to download a 64 bit version, there seems to be only one. I have been running with Administrator credentials and disabling the UAC unfortunately did not help, the problem is still the same.

    I will also try to contact support with the link that you sent.

    G'Day "rap"

    We seem to assume that you had no other Internet Security Suite or other AntiVirus Software installed on your system - is this correct ?

    I understand your problem as I service PC's and have installed many BD products on XP and Vista Systems.

    Other Internet Security or Anti-virus software including any active (TSR) Terminate Stay Resident utilities (right hand side of Start Bar - if you have activated to show all) programs - including any active

    * BPS Spyware & Adware Remover 9.2.0.7

    * CCleaner

    * MailWasher Pro

    !! * Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.4 or 1.5

    * System Spyware Interrogator

    * XoftSpy

    !! * Ad-Aware 2007 - the active "AdWatch"

    * Spy Sweeper, etc.

    will prevent the correct installation of the BD software - obviously the 64bit version was very important to have in your case.

    Most of these in fact do not have any conflict with BitDefender Software as long as no other is running (is active) as a TSR. If they are, then BitDefender is being blocked by some of these protective utilities and you have a conflict.

    It's like trying to drive 2 cars at the same time, where on will end up smashed on the telegraph pole, Only one Works as a TSR and the other counteract the function of the main Security and Anti-Virus programs function.

    The other Anti-Spy, etc utilities work without any difficulty when you only use the scanner functions of them, i.e. use SpyBot Search and Destroy to "Check For Problems" or AdAware scanner (Smart Scan, or Full Scan) to scan and detect anything that BitDefender may not detect.

    And yes, no Security or Anti-'anything' program that I know of, will protect you against everything in regard to Intruder, Spyware, Adware, Malware, Trojans, Worms, etc. etc. Just does not exist !

    However BitDefender is ranked in the top 10 (so they say) in the Internet Security Software stakes and I use it myself, as well as sell the product range from BitDefender.

    Having, I trust a better understanding of the things you have to look for and dissable, before you attempt to install BD, I now suggest that you

    1. un-install the current BD - if this does not correctly un-install, you will have problems re-installing.

    2. Disable any other Security and Anti- Virus and the like from starting when the system starts (boot_s Up)

    3. Then re-boot,

    4. Clean out the Trash and or Recycled Bin and or Temp folders, of any temp files,

    5. then try the installation of the 64 bit BitDefender Internet Security or Total Security 2008 again.

    Important to remember is, are the actual Firewall settings located in the "Settings" option, the waiting for the screen and making sure that the listed items on the left are active (when their text is fully black) then clicking on the "Firewall" item, then on the "Zones" tab, to ensure that your network IP address range is recognised. If this is not the case e.g. you do not see your LAN IP range like 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0 - then you do not have a internet connection(bitdefender has not allowed it) and you need to reconfigure it by remapping the IP's through the "Traffic" tab and activating the ">>Reset Profile" and entering (selecting) the correct configuration options in the 2 popup screens that will appear. Just read the choices and make the correct ones which become obvious when they appear.

    I use option 2 "Trusted Network" in the 21st popup screen then click OK and in the 2nd popup screen I select the 1st option "my Computer is on a Home .... Trusted Network" and click OK

    These are the main point to watch for and perform, other you can read in the Help files which are accessible from the TSR by right mouse clicking on the BD (red ball like) icon, or when you Show All.

    Have fun :rolleyes::ph34r:

  • Hi,

    Thanks for your reply! I just received this machine yesterday, so there are no other AV or similar products or older versions of BD installed. I am just running with the standard Vista settings minus the UAC.

    One thing is that the installation is gone before I was ever asked anything and I would assume that there should be at least some kind of welcome screen before BD starts setting itself up and thus might come into conflict with any other security software or settings. What do you think?

    I am also still wondering about you two guys mentioning the 64 bit version. Where do I get that? I go to www.bitdefender.com, click on Downloads, click on the download icon for AV 2008 and it takes me directly to the exe file. Same for IS (however I want only AV). If on the download page I click on the AV 2008 product instead (above the download link) it tells me that the product is compatible with Vista 32 and 64 and also the download link there leads me directly to the exe. Same for IS again. So where can I choose to download a 64 version?

    Hello Robert,

    There used to be a link to the 64bit version on the site. I am amazed to see that it was taken out :huh:

    The link that fabiowilly posted is for BitDefender Internet Security 2008 x64. If you need other version, visit: http://futurenow.bitdefender.com/ (I just checked, and the 64bit links are present there.)

    Cris.

  • Hi guys, thanks for the links, I now downloaded the 64 Bit version of AV 08 and the installation worked! Thanks and regards, Robert

  • You're welcome, Robert. :)

    If you have other questions, don't hesitate to post.
