Ransom Ware Protection (& etc)

I have several questions about BitDefender.

When installing BitDefender Anti-Ransomware Free I get the following error:-

“Error writing to Registry key

HKEY_LOCAL-MACHINE\Software\Bitdefender\AntiRansomwareUpgrade

RegSetValueEx failed; Code 5.

Access is denied

Click Retry to try again, Ignore to proceed anyway, press Abort to cancel installation.”

I have chosen the Abort option, which I believe removed the partial installation.

Set up

I am running BitDefender Anti-virus Free edition on a Windows 10 64 bit desktop.  I have not found any websites that tell me whether this contains ransomware protection.  Hence I have tried to install BitDefender Anti-Ransomware Free.

Questions

Q 1)     does BitDefender Anti-virus Free edition include the ransomware protection that is also found in BitDefender Anti-Ransomware Free?

Q 2)     if not, how can I install BitDefender Anti-Ransomware Free?

Q 3)            alternately, if I run Malwarebytes Anti-Ransomware and BitDefender Anti-virus Free edition, will either of these tools retard the performance of the other, significantly slow the machine down or conflict in any other way?

Update Failure

Secondly, when I boot I frequently get a message advising that a BitDefender Anti-virus Free edition update has failed.  When I click on the BitDefender shortcut icon on my desktop I see a message “update finished”, and when I click on that entry it shows a list of recent actions.  The top entry is that and update finished successfully on the date of the previous boot.  A few minutes later, clicking on that entry will show the update finished successfully on the date of my current boot.

Q 4)     why am I getting the update failed message, and is any action necessary to provide optimal protection?

  • Hello,

Bitdefender Anti-Virus Free doesn't feature the Ransomware Protection module the full product does. However they share the same signature database and will detect the infection.

Since you're getting a permission error, ensure that you install the ransomware vaccine while on a Administrator account.

Running multiple security solutions, its never recommended, they might conflict and cause more than just slowdowns.

The update error might be because the product is unable to connect to the internet in order to download the updates and after it connects it finishes the update. However that is just speculation, what error do you receive ?

  • Hello Cedric,

Try to restart the computer in clean boot and then uninstall the program that causes conflict in your installation esp if you have existing antivirus software installed.

Then in response from your questions

    1. Bitdefender Antivirus-free does not include Anti ransomware feature.

    2. You may first run Bitdefender Antiransomware in Administrator mode  by right click  the setup file -> Run as Administrator

    3. As far as the Security is concern, it is not a good idea to install more than 2 antivirus. It is because when an antivirus program encounters a virus, it removes it and quarantines it. But if a competing antivirus program sees that quarantined file and wants to remove and quarantine it in accordance with its own objectives, then it will repeatedly send reports and notifications about this virus that it is detecting, even though it is no longer actually a threat to your system. If you don’t want to continually get bogus warning messages, this will be a problem for you.

They will sap your power. Antivirus programs use a lot of your system memory to conduct system scans and other related operations. If you have two of these operating simultaneously, your system’s effectiveness can be greatly diminished or completely wiped out altogether, and without any benefit, since the two are performing redundant operations.

  • Hi. Here is Ransomware Protection.

  • Hello,

As mentioned previously the product is able to detect the deployment mechanism and payload as it shares the same behavioral engines and virus signatures as the paid product. In short if your machine gets hit by a known ransomware it will block and remove it.

It does not feature the anti-ransomware module that allows you protect files should anything ever slip.

  • Thank you, as I understand it, is a proactive module AVC.

Not screwed....Bitdefender is quite good at stopping unknown malwere... I observed the it recently received a new module update...Active Threat Defense module...that was recently introduced in the new 2018 line...look for files like heur.exec....in the Active Threat Defense folder.Any way is good to know that the free product is maintained with the latest technologies for detection.:D

Ok...didn't expect that, but again no antivirus is bullet proof.

:huh:Out of curiosity when did you run the virus at startup or later after the antivirus get to start completely? I noticed it takes a while for the free version to start....try bringing up the interface imediately after logon and you will see something like"Bitdefender services...etc" and after a few seconds it starts.

Also is interesting to see what the self defense module did?

  • BitDefender was able to recover their files, but the fact that he made the virus to their configuration files, speaks of the imperfection of its proactive defense)

Well did the behaviorial component manage to catch the virus after the infection?

In practice it should ,in reality?????

  • Proactive module did not react to this virus, BitDefender restored your files from backup.

Then is the case to file a report and wait for replay from the team.;)

  • If you are careful, you can find on your desktop an archive with the report for technical support)

    Well good job then.

    Keep it up.<img class=" data-emoticon="" src="https://us.v-cdn.net/6031943/uploads/ipb_attachments/emoticons/default_laugh.png" title="" />

  • Again, the virus encrypts the configuration files.
