IS 2018 Firewall Behaviour
Since upgrading from 2017 to 2018 ive noticed that the firewall does not work as it should.
It allows every application by default regardless fo settings; default behaviour set to block all, autopilot off and paranoid mode on. It does not prompt to allow or deny an application it just allows access.
The rule list gets deleted on pc restart and populated again when an app connects to the net (always allowed acces again) automatically.
It only works for the current session if i turn the firewall off and on and reset paranoid mode but does not work again after restart.
Reinstallation does not fix any of this. Note that the problems started on upgrade, everything was fine before.
This is a critical bug and need to be fixed as soon as possible
Thank you.

Same issue. Turning paranoid mode off and on make firewall paranoid mode working but after restart paranoid mode is shown as active but it does not work . Reinstall or clean install does not help.0 -
Same issue here! No need to repeat the issue. One comment I would like to add is that this issue should be given priority since this issue allows processes to communicate after rebooting before we have a chance to turn it back off and on.
Thanks in advance0 -
Hello,
I was unable to reproduce this issue on my test beds, please contact our support team via bitsy@bitdefender.com with the logs from the Bitdefender Support Tool.0 -

I suspect this is related to the problems BDIS is experiencing when using OpenVPN as discussed here:

Hello,
Please update to the latest build 22.0.12.161 and let me know if the issue persists.
Please note that the update requires a reboot to take effect.0 -
Tested with new build, still auto allows windows services like searchui and programs started by the user.
Default behavior is set to block but it allows nevertheless, only thing that circumvents this behavior is to turn the paranoid mode off and on again then it starts asking for user input.0 -

The issue persists. I can now start PIA without having to disable the firewall, but it is killed after a few hours. The amount of time seems to vary.0 -
Id like to comment on this issue.
I am a new user of bitdefender, well at least its been many years since I tried it. But seeing how they are consistently on the top of the detections rate and review sites I decided to try it. And I must say I have been very happy with it, except maybe being overaggressive at times(false positives), not nearly as bad as some of the malware ones out there and definitely better to be safe than sorry! So personally if I was to rate it, 9 out of 10. That is except the firewall.
Quick mention that I have been in IT for 15+ years and love networking and security and have tried many firewalls , both software and "hardware" based and in linux, unix, and windows. But to be honest, I didn't even know bitdefender had a firewall, and was a pleasant surprise when i started my 90 day trial to not only see one, but with almost all the settings you could hope for!! Even controlling the protocol, direction, and no way, ip's and ports?!?!? Wow!!!
So started playing with it, and getting very inconsistent results. So much so I figured there was settings I was missing, or an interface I didn't find yet (the -1 point from the 9 rating would be the interface, not very coherent, feel like you have to jump around alot and why some settings are in one place and others in the little service widget thingy makes no sense, anyways i digress). That was 60 days ago and played around for a while and sort of moved on bc too busy. But kept it running. Then a few days ago start getting a bunch of alerts and programs asking to connect. Obviously there was an update where they actually made it work???
So first a question. /index.php?/profile/211431-zv77/&do=hovercard&referrer=https%253A%252F%252Fforum.bitdefender.com%252Findex.php%253F%252Ftopic%252F77343-is-2018-firewall-behaviour%252F" href="<___base_url___>/index.php?/profile/211431-zv77/" style="background-color:transparent;color:inherit;font-size:20px;" title="Go to zv77's profile" rel="">zv77, /index.php?/profile/211442-evo-x/&do=hovercard&referrer=https%253A%252F%252Fforum.bitdefender.com%252Findex.php%253F%252Ftopic%252F77343-is-2018-firewall-behaviour%252F" href="<___base_url___>/index.php?/profile/211442-evo-x/" style="background-color:transparent;color:inherit;font-size:20px;" title="Go to Evo X's profile" rel="">Evo X, /index.php?/profile/211460-z80assembler/&do=hovercard&referrer=https%253A%252F%252Fforum.bitdefender.com%252Findex.php%253F%252Ftopic%252F77343-is-2018-firewall-behaviour%252F" href="<___base_url___>/index.php?/profile/211460-z80assembler/" style="background-color:transparent;color:inherit;font-size:20px;" title="Go to Z80Assembler's profile" rel="">Z80Assembler, /index.php?/profile/208268-mgnorae/&do=hovercard&referrer=https%253A%252F%252Fforum.bitdefender.com%252Findex.php%253F%252Ftopic%252F77343-is-2018-firewall-behaviour%252F" href="<___base_url___>/index.php?/profile/208268-mgnorae/" style="background-color:transparent;color:#4588c5;font-size:20px;" title="Go to Mgnorae's profile" rel="">Mgnorae, are you guys saying last years version works just fine!? And how long has 2018 been out? And did 2018 work right in the beginning and then mess up or always had these problems afa u know?!
And now a complaint, questions. /index.php?/profile/201429-sorin-g/&do=hovercard&referrer=https%253A%252F%252Fforum.bitdefender.com%252Findex.php%253F%252Ftopic%252F77343-is-2018-firewall-behaviour%252F" href="<___base_url___>/index.php?/profile/201429-sorin-g/" style="background-color:transparent;color:#4588c5;font-size:20px;" title="Go to Sorin G.'s profile" rel="">Sorin G. Very curious, when you said couldn't reproduce what exactly did you try?!?! Its SO obvious the paranoid and default ask or deny has not worked during that time period. How can you just say, cant reproduce?!?! I ask because Im about where I need to purchase and need to know what type of customer service will be provided. I get easily frustrated with support that is always in, prove were wrong mode. Sorry, strong way to put it but dont know how else to say it. So please explain what you tried. September 29th there is no issue then Oct 3 there is a fix. For what?
And I also ask when 2018 came out to see how long a broken firewall was allowed to exist before fixing it. And there are other bugs still. I have some programs that are blocked, never prompted for, nothing in rules or notifications or anywhere else I can see. But if I manually add an allowed rule, they connect just fine. Another question, is there a flat log file somewhere I can look at for the firewall or everything for bitdefender? Also could find a log file for notifications and quarantine, etc helpful when tshooting false positives, etc. as again the interface there is very restricting at times.
In all fairness, the program is great, and to even have the firewall features with this granularity is to me awesome! And the 2 other times I have submitted to the support dept. the false positives, the experience was very good and prompt. I also am not trying to call you out Sorin G, merely trying to find the problems and let you explain so we can figure it out. Ill be purchasing 2 family editions for my direct family and my parents household, so I want to be sure before doing so!!
Thanks!

Being a novice user, i would appreciate some help from you guys, concerning the firewall problem. I am experiencing the same problem, i have autopilot turned on, paranoia mode off, when i go to rules, i see dozens of applications allowed. The Firewall protects your computer from inbound and outbound unauthorized connection attempts, both on local networks and on the internet, right? In simple words, does that mean that given the BD firewall behavior, are users unprotected? Is there a potential risk that a malicious application will not be blocked?

2017 did not cause this problem for me, and it seemed to start immediately upon upgrading.0 -

Thanks for the reply, had a feeling bitdefender or sorin g wouldnt....
Sorry if you alrready mentioned, but have you tried or been succesful at going back to 2017? Seen mixed results from other posts in attempts to downgrade.0 -

I have not attempted that because of all the potential problems that could go along with it.0 -
Adding to the list:
After uninstalling BD and running with something else for over a week ive also deducted that my constant internet disconnects and video driver crashes were most likely caused by the BD 2018 version as ive had none in the past time.
Most noticeable was when playing online games i would get disconnected constantly. Or when watching video the nvidia driver would crash.
Would be nice if i could get my hands on the 2017 version, it was most stable.0 -

You've had video problems caused by BD?0 -
Hello,
We are working on resolving the reported situation.
The fix will be delivered via automatic updates.
Will update the thread when there is more info available.0 -
I am glad I am not the only one, does everyone here who have the problem got Windows 7 x64?
At my work I have windows 10+BD TS 2018 and I don't have the issue with paranoid mode.
/index.php?/profile/201429-sorin-g/&do=hovercard" data-mentionid="201429" href="<___base_url___>/index.php?/profile/201429-sorin-g/" rel="">@Sorin G. I am glad you guys are working on this issue. I have sent my last report from support tool to you guys, but have not received any communication since then. I really hope you guys can solve this, I hate to leave you guys being a customer since bitdefender 2009 mainly just for the firewall.0 -
Yes my nvidia display driver crashed when using mpc-hc,
Anyway after 20 days of not using BD i reinstalled to check the situation and a few hours in already lost my net connectivity when playing overwatch, and i mean no net for any application or windows, will see if my display drivers will crash again.
Also FW still doesnt work as it should.
Wonder if its ATD, Safe Files or the Firewall that is causing the problems, as usually its the newest thing id go with ATD, maybe its messing with its own files.
Ill check this thread occasonally for updates.0 -
I recently had an nvidia driver crash when browsing in Chrome with the latest Nvidia driver. Is this related to Bit Defender ?0 -

Interesting. I've been having video issues as well lately, and they came on out of nowhere. I wonder if mine are related too.0 -
Yes, its really unstable.
Anyway to just post a quick update, no matter the program, BD shuts down the network connection at random it seems even while browsing.
Still waiting for that update tho.0 -
Alright, the new update is up and the firewall seems to behave as it should with paranoid mode.
Too soon to check if i get disconnected while doing anything so ill keep on watching, but if i dont post anymore here for the next week or two the issue should be marked as solved.0 -
Aaand its disconnecting me like crazy, tried playing owerwatch it runs fine for awhile but it blocks my net traffic for everything else midgame and when i exit the game i cant rejoin, tried disabling the fw and everything else, still disconnects0 -
Alright test 2 says im not getting disconnected quickly when playing solo and not using blizzard group voice chat, ive also reset my rules and added them again with paranoid mode on.
Getting confusing results.
Ill keep updating if new developments0 -

Really appreciate you updating us on this! I had pretty much given up due to lack of any real response from them, but I guess they plan on letting the patches do the talking...
As far as features, they "claim" to do everything Im looking for, and from what alot of you have said it all worked before, so seems very likely they can get it working again, eventually.... right?
So ya if you could keep us updated here either way would be really cool. I dont have the time right now to test properly, but down the line hopefully could add some help when its mostly working. Sorry if already mentioned, but has anyone used wireshark or equivalent to watch the traffic? Although not sure if that would help much. I could also test later using an asa firewall or cisco router to watch the traffic.. see if traffic is going out but bd not letting back in, etc.

Hello,
Please update to the latest build 22.0.15.187 and let me know if the issue with Paranoid mode still persists.
Please note that the update requires a reboot to take effect.0 -
Alright after a complete reinstall and then by removing and installing another product im now sure that BD randomly blocks my internet access every n minutes.
Cant figure out a pattern its almost random.
Tried different setting variations but all in the end fail.
Turning the fw off during the internet blockage also does nothing.
This makes it totally unusable and im forced to use another.
Note the firewall paranoid mode works as it should now.0 -
###### to hear but really appreciate the update. Unfortunately my 90 day trial is over so I cant try it now anyways and have had to move on. BD has everything I want except the whole working part...0
