Bd 2008 Update Failing

I've been working w/ the BD customer service via email for a while now and none of their suggestions is working so I thought I'd open this to the general public.

Basically the update fails with the following message. It's always the same file that seems to fail:

"An error occurred during the update(Invalid MD5)....".

The file it seems to stick on is C:\Program Files\BitDefender\BitDefender 2008\NAG/Close2Exp/check.gif.

There is no no file "check.gif" in the directory. I wanted to test and place a gif file in the directoy XP won't allow me. I have administrator rights on the directory, but can't seem to create a file in the directory. Is BD protecting it?

I'd appreciate and help...

TIA,

Frank

    No, I don't use a proxy.

The other thread was mostly about updates not happening in a timely fashion because of the server not being available. My problem is deeper. I'm getting some sort of data error.

  • Hello garberfc,

Try this download the updates from here. Double click on it to install. Reboot your pc and try to update again.

Yes BitDefender's Selfprotection service denies any changes to the installation directory of BitDefender or killing BitDefender related processes. To temporary disable it you have to do this press the windows button together with r now type devmgmt.msc press enter. Go to the view menu select show hidden devices. Now a new section called non plug and play compatible drivers will appear now right click on BDSelfPr and press on disable.choose yes you may be asked to reboot. Now you are able to change things. Be sure that you re-enable it again by doing the same but choose enable.

    Best regards

    Hi Niels,

Thanks for the response. I didn't seem to work. I downloaded the 2008 AV weekly.exe, installed it, rebooted and immediately tried to so the update and got the same error message the File: NAG/CloseExp2/check.gif.

Would it be possible to email me the file so I can place it in the directory and then do the update? Maybe the update routine will see the file already in place and skip it and continue with the rest of the update.

    Any other thoughts?

    Thanks,

    Frank

  • Hello garberfc,

The problem is that I have BitDefender Total Security 2008 installed on my computer and on my computer there isn't any file present called check.gif. I have an non-English version.I am also only a normal BitDefender user no support person.

Lets try to change the update server. For instructions take a look at this topic. See if update now succeed.

I don't know if you know somebody else who can temporary can install BitDefender Antivirus 2008 Trial and try to copy the check.gif to the NAG folder.

    Best regards

    Hey Niels,

I changed the update server and am having the same problem. The Setting->Update->Update tab shows that automatic checks/updates are happening.

My Virus sig is 1256786, engine ver is 7.19383. Do these number seem current?

    Thanks

    Frank

  • Hello garberfc,

The numbers you mentioned are current. So your BitDefender version isn't outdated. Or it must be that some files got corrupted that keep you connecting to an invalid package on one of the servers of your country. You can try a repair installation. Right click on the red BitDefender icon near the system tray press on exit. Now click on start,(all) programs,BitDefender 2008,modify,repair, uninstall. Choose for repair. I think that it's better to contact support because they are the only who can help you. A complete uninstallation I don't think that will work.

I've done a complete uninstallation before and it didn't help.

I just tried the doing the "Repair" with and without having BD running. In both cases the Repair button was disabled/grayed out. Darn! I thought we were onto something w/ the repair...

    Thanks for the suggestions,

    Frank
