Icon Went Black - Just Sitting There

Okay, first off some gripes. I had AVG and BD 9 malware running together and that worked very well. The license came up on BD 9 and I opted to renew, only I got shoved into the "total" package. I had to blow away AVG to install it, and while AVG wasn't the greatest on earth, I never had any problems with it, I did not want to replace the anti-virus with this. But against my better judgement I decided to try it out.

There were problems right from the start, beginning with three possible downloads and no instructions anywhere as to which one to take. I chose the "32" one, which seems to be working, but why wasn't that clear? So I install the bugger and all of a sudden a bunch of crap starts appearing on my screen, warnings about this and that, it prevented a Msoft update, it added a completely unwanted bar to Firefox, all this junk I had to disable, including the firewall so Msoft update would function. It says you should disable the Msoft firewall, but that's retarded, what if BD isn't working, like it totally isn't at the moment. Go out on the net bareback? Are you insane?

Anyway . . . the problem is the icon went black and when you start the program it says "Bitdefender services have been switched off temporarily for an update", and it adds "please wait a moment". First off, the protection should NEVER switch off for updates, and that was like a half hour ago. It's still black. WTF?

I am not an expert but I have learned that you never have 2 firewalls running. You must choose between Microsoft and in this case, BitDefender Firewall. I've also read that the Microsoft firewall is pretty useless. I have the BitDefender Firewall active. You will be notified by BitDefender and/or microsoft security center that you have no firewall if either one quits on you. You also should only have one anti virus. There are too many conflicts with more than one firewall and real time anti virus.

The BitDefender anti phishing toolbar in Firefox can be hidden if you choose.

I have noticed the service shutdown for an update occasionally but only for a couple of minutes at the most and it has started up again. Not sure I am crazy about this but also not sure if it's standard practice and you just don't know it with other applications?

Basically if you have BD Total Security running you really should not have anything else running in real time. I do manual scans with other applications like SuperAntiASpyware periodically but my real time is BitDefender. You will have all kinds of conflicts when you have too many security applications running.

You should have minimally an anti virus, anti spyware and firewall in place. If you don't want them all in one suite then choose the individual programs of your choice. When I first started out I had BitDefender AV10, Spyware Doctor and the free Zone Alarm firewall.

I finally decided to go with the suite and have been happy with BitDefender. I had a few issues with the BD firewall in the 2008 suite but it was fixed in the 2009 version.

    Hope some of this helps.

  • Well, I'm sure the evil empire firewall is not the best it could be, but . . . many years now using AVG for virus and BD for malware and the standard firewall, and no issues, none. Not even when I was using PTP for about 3 months straight. It seems to work.

Anyway . . . I have two PC's, BD 9 expiring on both, so I tried AVG's "complete" package, and I like it much better. It's much cleaner and less instrusive. Yeah, I know, AVG has not ranked up there in the past, but it's always worked and it doesn't bug me. Goodbye $80, but I'm happier.

    More problems with BD:

    - A Msoft update keeps trying to install every time I boot and shutdown, this has to be a BD problem, because it's not present on the other PC.

    - The darn BD shell extension comes up in the goofiest places, like when changing wallpaper it presents a "vault" bar. Why the heck would I want that to come up, EVER????

    - Getting rid of BD 9 was a real panic. BDMCON stuck on in the start-up regime, I killed that with Antitracks, but the shell extension would not die. I finally had to use Hijack, Killbox, and a registry editor.

That's it, I'm done. Ridiculous behavior.
