Increased Internet Usage With 2010 Trial?

I have just joined this forum to ask this question:

A few weeks ago I installed the 30 day trial version of BitDefender Internet Security 2010 after my subscription with F-Secure ran out and their 2010 version did not work as well as their 2009 offering (wish I'd stuck with that...).

Since installing BitDefender my internet usage has roughly doubled. I am on a 20GB monthly limit and that has already been exceeded and we are barely half way through the month. I disconnected the wireless router and put the modem back on thinking maybe neighbours had found a way in (even though it is WAP/WEP secured) but a couple of days after that test it is still the same. We are not using the internet for anything other than its the usual. Last Saturday it was 3.5GB but I spent the whole day with a new game (not playing online)!

Has anyone seen this sort of thing before? I can't imagine how it could be down to BD but I am clutching at straws...

This is only a suggestion,i don't know if it will be the reason, but you could try disabling the vulnerability module. as this will be checking Microsoft updates frequently, from the traffic i have monitored it connects to a I.P Range that resolves to limelight networks lcc, but how much actual bandwidth this uses i don't know, apart from the BD update downloads, and the BD comunicatior (livesrv.exe) there i don't think is anything else bd related that uses the net, but try without the vulnerability module and see if the usage decreases

Thanks for that. As I have had only one reply I can only assume that other people have not seen the same problem of apparent increased usage but I will try it.

It may just be that they ain't noticed it yet, or are to preoccupied with other problems with this security app

I only became aware of the connections it will keep making due to a free ware app called peer guardian 2( I use U-torrent p2p) pg2 blocks I.P ranges known to be against p2p file sharing

what was happening was this module, causes the windows update process to run(sometimes constantly)

it of course check's for updates at M.S, but it uses a content delivery service,LimeLight Networks LLC

a blocked ip range in pg2, if you Google for limelight networks llc you can find more out ,several people have complained about their web robots probing their pc's day and night, so simply disabling the module (vulnerability) should stop any traffic associated with it,did for me

    Other problems...?

I could only find one comprehensive review of antivirus software and that seemed to say that this one is the business so I am surprised to hear that (although the sound coming on, on my PC is hit and miss these days too; don't know if that is anything to do with it). I was quite happy with my F-Secure until shortly before expiry they offered a free trial of their latest and that didn't work as well as the old version (browsers crash when trying to attach files to emails...!).

This free trial is up in a day or so; maybe I will try free AVG.
