Shieldsup Ping Reply

 Just for the heck of it, I ran GRC's ShieldsUp test, and it showed all of my computer's ports stealthed, but that it failed the ping test, meaning that ShieldsUp received an answer to their pinging of my computer. Is this something to be concerned about and is there a setting I should change in BDIS2008 to alleviate this weakness?

Thanks in advance for any help! :)

  • There should be an option at firewall settings, which allows you to filter ICMP traffic.

    Andrei,

Thanks for the response. The options shown are "Allow all traffic, block all traffic, or custom." I don't know enough about what these settings actually do. Obviously, "allow all" is the current setting that lets the ping test fail, but should I set it on block all or custom?

    Thanks again! :)

Well, as I should have done before posting, I searched the forum for similar questions and found there is a previous thread about this.

It should answer my question about what the different options mean. Thanks anyway! :)

I have my ICMP settings just like yours, except I don't have the ICS one checked. When I run the ShieldsUp "All Service Ports" scan, as you did, absolutely all of the ports are shown as stealthed. However, it still says my computer failed because it responded to a ping request. I don't know enough about it, but the laptop I am using has a wireless connection to the other computer in my house, which is connected via DSL. So, I don't really know if that has something to do with failing the ping test or not. I have not yet figured out how to make it pass this test.

    Hi CDR,

Do you mean that the "other" computer in your house has Internet Connection Sharing enabled and shares it's internet connection with the laptop? In this case, both your computers have the same IP on the internet and ShieldsUP doesn't test the security of the laptop, it tests your other computer. Try to run the ShieldsUP tests directly from the other computer and I believe you'll get identical results.
