Bitdefender Antivirus Plus 2017 was updated to version 21.0.24.54. I put again "C:\Users\me\Desktop" under ransomware protection but things are not fixed. The Desktop icons auto arranged to medium again after reboot.

The bitdefender support found the culprit: Intel® Driver Update Utility v2.6.2.4, respectively esrv_svc.exe found in "C:\Program Files\Intel\SUR\QUEENCREEK\" - I simply uninstalled this application.
