Can the VPN "Advanced" settings icon be customized or changed?

Hi everyone,

I’m reaching out to get some feedback on the icons used in the settings menu. I’m a visual person and often rely on icons to help me navigate and remember features. Currently, I’m having some issues with the icon for the “Advanced” category. For some reason, I associate this icon with religious symbols, which distracts me and makes it harder to focus on the content.

Has anyone else experienced similar issues with this icon or other icons? I’m wondering if there’s a way to customize these icons to better suit individual preferences. Specifically, can the “Advanced” icon be changed or replaced with something more neutral?

Also, I’ve noticed that the colors used for some icons can be distracting. For instance, the white star on blue background symbol for “Advanced” reminds me of certain political icons, which affects my perception. The green color used for the privacy icon, while calming, doesn’t seem commanding enough for something as crucial as a kill switch.

On the other hand, I find the “Auto Connect” icon very clear and well-crafted, with its circular arrow and dash effectively representing automation.

Are there any options or tools available to customize these icons or adjust their colors? Or is this something the community or developers might consider for future updates?

I’d appreciate any insights or suggestions on this!

Thanks!

Hello @Bee24 and welcome to the community.

Thank you for your comprehensive feedback, I think it's a valid point of view. I've looked at the icons together with the VPN team and I see what you mean. Of course, any similarity to any symbol outside the UI is pure coincidence.

There is no way to give the user the possibility to customize those icons, since they are basically integrated in the user interface, but the VPN developers have sent their assurances that the icon in question will be changed in a later update, in a few weeks time, because there are some other improvements waiting in the pipeline to be released before further UI developments can be made.

As for the Kill Switch feature display, no changes will be applied here. The green color is commonly used to indicate that a feature is enabled or turned ON, because it is widely associated with positive actions and status. At the same time, green generally symbolizes safety, success, and approval. This makes it a good color to convey that a feature is working properly or that a setting is correctly enabled. Just like you've mentioned, green is often calming and reassuring, which can help users feel more confident that the system is functioning as expected.

Furthermore, in computer software and other applications, the green color is frequently used in contrast to red, which typically indicates a problem, error, or something turned off. At the same time, a contrast with a grayed out status may also suggest that a feature is disabled. Of course, the visual contrast here helps users quickly understand the status of a feature, therefore no changes have been deemed necessary in this case.

Thank you once again for taking the time to share your thoughts with us.

    Alex,

Thank you for your thoughtful response and for considering my feedback. I appreciate the insight into the design choices and the team's commitment to refining the UI. I's great to hear that the icon in question will be updated in a future release, and I understand the reasoning behind keeping the Kill Switch feature display as is. The explanation about the use of green for positive actions makes perfect sense.

Thanks again for your response and for ensuring that user feedback is valued in the development process.

    Best regards,
