Hi everyone,

I have a expressvpn router which I use to connect to the internet with my pc, I can use the bitdefender vpn on top of that with no problem.

My question is when I'm for example connected through the expressvpn router to for example France and then I connect with the bitdefender vpn app to for example the Netherlands will my traffic then be double encrypted?

Will my traffic then be double hop?

Will my traffic then first be sent to the expressvpn server in France and then from there sent to the bitdefender vpn server in the Netherlands?

Is this even worth doing? Does this setup provide better security or won't it matter?

Thx

    Double Encryption and Double Hop

Yes, your traffic will be double encrypted and double hopped. Here’s how it works:

    1. Your PC connects to the ExpressVPN router in France.
    2. Your traffic is encrypted and sent to the ExpressVPN server in France.
    3. The Bitdefender VPN app then encrypts your traffic again and sends it to the Bitdefender VPN server in the Netherlands.
    4. Your traffic is now double encrypted and has passed through two VPN servers.

    Benefits and Drawbacks

    Pros:

    • Enhanced Security: Double encryption and double hopping make it more challenging for hackers to intercept and decipher your data.
    • Increased Anonymity: Your IP address is masked twice, making it harder to trace your online activities.

    Cons:

    • Reduced Speed: Double encryption and hopping can slow down your internet connection due to additional processing and routing.
    • Potential for Conflicts: Running two VPNs simultaneously may cause conflicts or errors, depending on the configurations and compatibility.

    Is it Worth It?

If you require extreme security and anonymity, this setup might be beneficial. However, for most users, a single reputable VPN connection should suffice. Consider your specific needs and weigh the pros and cons before deciding.

Additional information: Double Hop VPN is available in Bitdefender VPN for Windows, Android, and iOS. However, Double Hop customization is currently unavailable on Windows. You can find all the details in the link provided below by Bitdefender Support and on the Bitdefender blog.

    Hello :)

Overlapping VPN's doesn't seem like a good idea. I don't know if they will create a double hop, or double encryption as Bitdefender uses different servers and technology than Express VPN. Let alone trying in successfully Split-tunneling an app or website.

IMO, just go with one or the other, which ever one has the best speed and connection stability, if the router one can be disabled. I personally like to keep things in the desktop mode of VPN, DNS etc, for greater and easier ability to shut it off, pause it, disconnect, add a website etc.

    Cheers :)
